Hey guys,

Im planning to swap my ar10a2 uppers from a a2 style to a4 style and new hand guards, just realized i might have a problem...
This ar10 has a permanent muzzle break factory installed (NJ LAW). Does this have to be removed to change the upper and replace the front a2 sights?

This is my first time doing anything to my ar10 any suggestions on installation would be great.

Thanks

Yes, the muzzle device has to be removed to change the A2 front sight to a gasblock.

It's no big deal to get the MB off. The question I would have is whether or not the barrel is threaded under the MB and whether you would have to permanently attach the new muzzle device. How is the MB pinned? That is usually a good indicator as to whether it is threaded or not. Two small sideways pins means no threads. A 1/4" sized dot (blind pin) at the 6 o'clock position means it is most likely threaded.

it was pinned from Aramlite at the factory, so im assuming its not removable since im in nj and they are not legal if removable... cant i cut off the front sight and replace with a 2 piece one that iv seen?

I feel your pain. Massachusetts has a ban on everything... I think they're gonna try taxing the oxygen soon. It is easy to use a dremel to remove the A2 sight. Go easy so you don't start cutting into the barrel (like I did). There are many makers of 2 piece gas blocks that can be used in its place. Otherwise you need to remove the brake which will destroy the brake in the process and possibly damage the barrel threads.

+1!! Dremeled the front sight off a Mini-14. Who knew that fragile little cutting disc cut so fast? Barrel has a jagged slash the same length as the factory front sight base - lucky that the new muzzle brake and sight covered the "modified" barrel.
