New to this
Hey everyone I'm new to the AR idea and until recently to be honest I was against the idea of having one, as I thought they were just over priced and rediculous (shooting one will really change a guys mind) any way I'm kinda lost with this and there are so many options when starting a build. I know some of the things I'm wanting but they are all accessory items. I'm looking for some ideas on where to get some good parts and what I even need that won't break the bank. I'm wanting my first build to be mostly basic and go from there. I'm sure this won't be my first build, but don't want to blow a lot of money on mistakes.
What do you want to use it for (long range, 3 gun, plinking, etc)?
What's you total budget?
For accessories you need at least mags and ammo.
It's nice to have a sling, a good optic, and a good trigger.
ETA There's lots of options at Palmetto State Armory, they have a good repution for good quality and reasonable prices.
Also, welcome to the site!
I would check out the
Palmetto State Armory Rifle Kits. They are reasonably priced and you can upgrade parts using their drop down list. A 16" barrel is basic and is a great start. Longer barrels are generally more for more precision shooting.
With a kit you'll still need a stripped lower receiver. Your local gun shop might have some in stock. You could order one online, but it will have to be transferred to your local shop for a fee. Contact your local shop to see what their transfer fee is.
I personally prefer to have use a flat top upper, a free float barrel and a free float hand guard. I like to have a quad rail hand guard for versatility with accessories. As far as brands of stocks go ... it's more of a preference. Magpul stocks are top quality. I prefer to use a telescoping stocks for my 16" rifles.
Welcome!
It can be a bit overwhelming. But in all honesty its pretty hard to mess up building an AR-15 all the little pieces only go one place. And with the abundance of tutorials out there anyone can do it. The first things you need to answer are is how much you want to spend, and what you want to use the rifle for. Then go from there….. Also there are some basic "looks" you can go for like a flat top or carry handle. Fixed A2 stock or adjustable stock. Things like that…..
My budget for my first build is 600-800 and initially just some plinking till I get comfortable with it then I'm looking into maybe some competitions down the road. All my rifle experience is with hunting rifles thus far.
Hey Truckie, I would recommend buying a complete AR then adding upgrades as you go along. Rock River Arms has some pretty inexpensive completely built AR's. Just a thought.......

I have given thought to buying one and then modifying, however I really think that it will be more rewarding and fun to build my own.

IMO building one is the way to go. Have you seen this?

Fill it out and it will help you. Some can be a little tricky as for example, most charging handles come assembled so you wont need to buy the individual parts.
