Mission: Stay under $500 for an AR15 build!

My post here got my wheels spinning...

Building the most simple pre-ban 16" model you can, is it possible to stay under $500 to build an AR15?

Here's the closest I have so far:

Lower Receiver - $75 $77 @ Essential Arms
Upper Receiver - $80
Lower Parts Kit - $45
Buttstock Kit - $50
Barrel Kit - $170
Bolt Carrier - $95

Total - $517 (excluding shipping)

Anybody know of places where I could find prices lower than the above?

I'm ready to roll on this if I can find the suppliers!

You can get a CAR-15 style stock from TheTic00 on the EE for $35 shipped.

Yeah, where the hell are you getting $75 lower receivers?

Doinga build under $500 isn't hard at all as long as you have some time over a few months to shop the EE for deals.

My last M16A1 build was under $500. Easy to do when you get a complete upper mnus BCG for $125 at the gunshow.

Did one just over $400 thanks to EE.
The lower came from:
http://www.ameetecarms.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=11
It was $200, yours is cheaper and a used complete (post ban 16") upper for $220.
Happy shopping.

Lower receiver that I bought in 1999 for $100 complete with LPK.
$40 CAR buttstock /buffer tube assy
$300 for pawn shop A1 CAR upper with Colt BC and Bolt. Needed A1 Rear sight leaf spring $0.75

Total $440.75

Shoots great. Feeds everything from cheap Russian Ammo to Mil-surp. Bought it as a beater. It's one of my favorites. Runs right around 2 MOA with most US ammo. WOlf and such run around 3-4 inches at 100yds.

Link to Essential Arms lower receivers added to the OP.

For the rest, you're going to need dealer pricing (hint hint)

If you're talking about the stock I'm thinking of, I believe that's just the stock -- no buffer, spring, tube, etc...

True, but I'm a man who likes to live by his own timelines. So while I will never look down upon the EE (as there are many a fine deal in there) it would be excellent to identify suppliers who always have parts available for purchase.

Definitely a good deal you found there! Any idea where I can find < $100 BCG's (excluding the EE)?

Do you care what it looks like? Is there a model specifically you have in mind. The sub 500 mark is easy to hit. Hell for 700 +/- you can have the whole ball of wax. Rail system, Flip up sights etc.

I'm definitely intrigued... Feel free to tell me more either in a reply to the thread or PM or email.

Still, I think it would be nice to have a "low end" AR15 for trade or sale. Never hurts to have something like that on hand...

If you catch CMMG at one of the gun shows they set up at, they have "barrel rifles" for $565.00 (or somewhere close). They are piled in a barrel and you pull them out and find one you like. These DO NOT have CMMG lowers, they are "parts guns". The plus side, you can trade them back in to them for a "real" CMMG rifle for the full price you paid for them.

How about AR224 AR15/M16 Parts Kit, minus lower receiver, with M4 Telescoping Stock, for $414.50.

Item AR150 is a flat top kit with a detachable A2 carry handle, but is $449.95

Are these new or used parts? Would love to hear feedback on these.
Last A1 retro I did came out under $600 with used parts: furniture and upper (minus BCG)

Looks like they also have a AR15/M16 Parts Kit, minus lower receiver (Included are stocks, G.I. handguards, A-1 barrel, A2 type upper receivers, and all internal parts) for $399.50!

Not bad at all...

are these 'new' parts or a mix of used and new?

the cheapest I can get with good and new parts is $600.

using a mix of used and new would be cheaper, good job!!

nothing beats scrounging for parts!

ETA:
I built this one with new parts for $727

Go with the tic00 buttstock, it's complete and surprisingly good quality.

It'll save you enough $ from your estimated total that you can get a charging handle for your rifle too.

I built this one for around 700 from all new quality parts.

Spike's lower (at local shop) $125
Complete Kit from Del-ton $480
DPMS LPK $60
CMMG carry handle (EE) $30

Why not use a Cav Arms lightweight lower from Brownells ? They are cheaper because you get a buttstock and pistol grip. And VERY lightweight as well. That should keep it under $500.

here is the closest i have come to a 16" under $500......

oly arms lower- free (inherited)
lower parts kit- $62
a2 grip- $20
a2 stock- $65
oly arms flat top upper with parts- $130
bolt carrier assy.- $100
charging handle- $30
a2 handguards w/16" m4 barrel, gas tube, fsb- $70 (extras from local gunshop)

grand total- $477 i think

granted, you guys probably cant pick up the barrel assy from a gunshop like i can (dont want it though), or get a lower like me, but everything else was off of the oly arms website

Be wary of Sarco. They sell airsoft parts and pass them off for the real deal. Its why their carry handles are so cheap.

JSEsurplus.com has decent prices on parts, I got a delton BCG for $105 there. Their site is a PIA to navigate though and you are best off looking up parts by manufacturer.

I actually prefer looking up the parts I need and then calling it in to them and sometimes not all their parts are listed, I tend to get a better deal on shipping that way too.

They had $48 DPMS LPK's but I can't find them anymore.

I am kinda in myself, I have a couple cav lowers and other parts that if I get a good deal on the other stuff I need I should be able to keep it sub $500 pretty easy.

$120.00 lower
$50.00 DPMS parts kit
$7.00 castle nut
$4.50 carbine action spring
$18.95 Magpul trigger guard
$33.95 buffer tube
$231.44 in parts plus leftover componenets from other rifles. Of course it cost a certain amount to replace those parts on the other rifles.
$99.00 A3 upper
$85.00 Arms 40 BUIS
$92.00 Magpul CTR
$261.00 DD carbine handguards (+10 free magazines)
$130 M4 profile barrel
$11.00 carbine gas tube
$75.95 YHM flipup frontsight
$24.99 YHM phantom flashhider
$20.95 charging handle
$799.89 cost of parts that went on other rifles.
and some other parts, prices of which were lost to the ages.
So my $231.44 gun really cost me $1031.33.
