Picatinny rail strip for light mounts

Howdy gang,

In the several years I have been here I've seen many instances where instances where AR owners have bolted 2"-4" strips of picatinny rail directly to M4 plastic handgaurds. Because of a recent shoulder injury I am having a hard time with rails(I tend to not like rails anyhow) and the added weight out front, but I still want to keep a good light on my sticks. I also like the simplicity of this setup and want to keep my light on my handguard and not on my front sight or other mounted options that I've seen.

So, my question is:

How did you make your setup? Tips or thoughts on light placement? And most importantly, where did you get your rail strips? The only picatinny rail strips that I've seen sold separately are the magpul plastic ones for the MOE. I would rather stay with aluminum rails.

I normally bypass the rails entirely with IWC SMCs. What kind of light are you looking to mount?

Wow IWC has some very cool mounting solutions. I'm sure I'll be ordering from them soon even if it's not a light mount. Those SMC's look slick though.

My current light to mount is a G2L and it's family members. One thing that still gives a picatinny strip an advantage is that I will probably acquire a x300 light that I would like to try out on a rifle and perhaps something from the scout family. At $60 each that would start to sting after three of them. Silly next to the price of the lights themselves perhaps, but still....
