HS/IWC Thorntail light mount
I did some searching but could not find anything.
Does anyone have any experience with the Thorntail light mount from Haley Strategic / Impact Weapons Components?
I am specifically interested in its application on a Troy TRX Extreme mounted on the top rail with a Troy folding front sight.
Does it clear the sight adequately? Pics would be helpful if anyone has tried this combo out.
Thanks.
They just started shipping the Thorntail like 3 days ago.
I think its going to be a while before anyone can answer your question other than the manufacturer.
Thanks. I didn't realize that it was that new. I just stumbled upon it when I was searching for a light mount yesterday.
I'll ask and see if its been run on that particular rail.
What I can say is this. I know that Travis has run it on guns with folding front sights and has not had an issue. But we'll find out for sure.

The THORNTAIL will attach to the top rail. If mounted there, you're Troy Folding Front Sight will need to be mounted behind THORNTAIL in order for THORNTAIL to be attached to the top rail.

Thank you for your reply.
I ordered a Thorntail in early/midish December when he was still in pre-order stage. has anyone who's not special( i.e got them for T.E/ Industry guys.) got theirs yet ? I was just wondering about the turn around time. any type of time table would be cool, i may or may not have been waiting for the mail man like a lost puppy
I got mine late last week, and I really like it.
The problem I have with it however is that with the 1" light ring the ring and mounting screw was hitting my front sight post. A scout light will mount where I want it, however the screw and the ring mount makes the mount too wide for what how I wanted to use it. I tried to file down the screw and the ring to make it work with my FSP and wound up ruining them. I know I could have mounted the light on a side rail instead but my rail is kind of wide and I was not happy with the light placement there. The rest of the mount is fine and I wound up ordering a scout light to go with my new mount because I am backasswards.
I hope that the screws that come with the scout light can mount it to the Thorntail. If not, can someone from IWC let me know if I can order the screws separately?
Shoot Earl an email, he'll fix you up with screws.
I found that if you pull the mount aft a slot or two, the width of the mount and screws will drop into the opening of the FSB and not be an issue. You have to move it until you get it in the right spot. I'm running a G2 with the oversize shock bezel on one of my mounts, and a scout on the other.
I agree. I hate it striking the FSB. But there are some design reasons why its that way.
You'll also need a star driver to take the factory base of the Scout.

good to hear there getting out what was your timeline like in terms of from payment to at your door ? i'm running the scout but I kinda figured it might be iffy for the larger lights that close to the FSP/rail. but so far its the closes to exactly how i want to run my light. i bought the gear sector mount thinking it was this mount in concept. surefire make lights i have and will continue to trust my life to but their mounts leave a whole hell of a lot to be desired.
Remember cantilever mounts aim to get the bezel of the light forward of the FSB to reduce shadowing. The Thorntail was designed to get the entire light off of, and forward of, the rail. That not only reduces barrel shadowing, but it frees up the handguards/rails to put your hands on. This is of real value when shooting a gun with carbine length handguards.
Every rail is different. And every rail positions the light differently with resepct to the FSB. This mount wants to push the light forward of the rail, and forward of the FSB, while keeping it as close to the centerline as possible. The problem is, if you make it tight on top, its loose on the side, so to speak. And if you make it tight on the side, its too tight on top. So the closeness to the FSB is a trade off.
There has been a trend away from the standard FSB and to a low profile gas block under a rail. In that case there is absolutely no issue with the Thorntail. There is also a trend towards wires and tape switches, which makes light placement less critical, but adds some other management issues.
All that said, not every mount works for everyone, or every style of shooting. And there is always the ability to tweak the design in later versions.
Can someone please tell me what size screws would fit through the base and into the scout? If it is a common size I can just run down to the hardware store this afternoon.
What about this setup with the Alpha series Troy rail with integrated front sight?
Thorntail holding an M300A on a 7" DD OmegaX Rail with a 12.5" Barrel.
I ordered it December 6th and got it Dec 29th.
I also got another one last week, here it is on my SCAR 17. On an AR15 its nice. On a SCAR its absolutely the most badass light mount in existence.

Sorry the ring hit the FSB. We tried to accommodate as many combinations of lights/rails/FSB's/mounting locations in the design.
The screws are 8-32 x 1/4" SHCS in Black Oxide, available at LOWES...

You are totally correct Lancelot... thanks for the explanation on the design.
