Best rail covers? Why? Also - LaRue Index clips?

Looking for some rail covers for a carbine length rail system. Which rail covers are the best? Why? Thanks.

Do LaRue index clips do the same thing that the rail covers do? Does anyone have or use index clips?

Best is subjective, and a lot is going to be based on preference. I like slim hand guards, so I would use Ergo ladder covers, or LaRue index clips, however, they don't offer as much heat protection as other rail covers, like the ones by Magpul, LWRC, TROY, Tangodown, and etc etc.

Having tried a bunch of rail covers I settled on the index clips.

They're always the perfect length, they're comfortable in the hand (no sharp edges) and they're secure.

Sometimes they don't quite get right up next to whatever else is on the rail but that's really a function of that particular part, not the clips.

Also, I blame LaRue and their generosity for my addiction to them, they gave me a handful at the Charlotte NRA Annual Convention and got me hooked on 'em.

That said, I'd love to try the SCAR panels eventually. Just to see.

I tried the various lengths of the KAC covers, but then started using the LT Index Clips.

As others have said, they are extremely customizeable, and they make different types for things like securing wires for lights etc.

You can also stagger different colors of them to give your rifle a bit of extra camouflage if that's your thing.

I've tried several and prefer the index clips as well.

+1 for index clips from LaRue. Very flexible, very affordable.

the only downside of the index clips is that they are not as protective as some of the other options (XTM, KAC, TD)

if you plan on shooting from hard barriers or anything like that, the index clips may not be best solution

i use them on a few of my AR's and I do like them quite a bit.

I like the KAC because that can be had in various sizes and can be found fairly cheap. I would like to have some of the Larue clips to secure the remote switch though.

I use Tango Down SCAR panels for the part I'm holding onto. Very grippy texture to them. Index clips for everything else.

Index clips
If I do use a full panel it is KAC but I really like the LaRue clips.

I have tried multiple rail covers and from now own I will only use LT Index Clips. Get those and grab yourself an armadillo (if ya don't get one for free). They are kind of a bitch to put on or take off without one, but I like that. Let's me know they will stay on there.

Index clips are great.

personally I prefer ladder rails, as I acutally like the rail "shape" in my hand vs. the roundness that the index clips make.

I used to have the magpul rubbery type covers - the bigger ones, and they just made the forend too bulky.
I now use a combination of XTM panels and regualr rubber ladder style covers and have been very happy.

I agree it's just personal preference, I'm using on my KAC carbine rail system KAC panels on the sides and lower rails and Magpul XTM panels on the top rail, because I prefer their better heat and rail protection.

On my other 9" midlength rail on my other carbine I'm using XTM panels except on the top rails I have Magpul ladder covers for now, I'm going to replace the ladders with Index Clips for better protection.

+1 for LaRue Index Clips. The best compromise between heat protection and slim design. Also, if they don't fit something on your rail (mount, lights, grip, etc) you can file them down to fit.

I was considering using the Magpul XTM covers on my POF but the Larue clips would seem to be a better idea,at least on my rifle.

What hand stop is that? Looks different than the Larue ones?

I prefer magpul XTM panels. Might not be able to cover every single slot on the rail, but they stay on better than anything else i've used, and provide a comfortable grip.
