Issues with sling mounting under FSB?
I recently picked up a new colt 6920 (my first AR) and was not real impressed with the factory sling so made a trip to a local gun store that specializes in ar15 platforms. While looking at sling options the owner informed me that using the sling attatchment point under the FSB can actually damage the accuracy of the barrel. I really don't want to damage my new rifle but I also would like to stick with the K.I.S.S. philosiphy. A friend of mine has the moe handgaurd on his AR with a nice swivle attatchment mounted to the gaurd but after an equal amount of rounds fired his handgaurd was quite warm while mine was still cool. So I'd rather not change out the handgaurd to use as an attatchment point. Is there any truth to the barrel losing accuracy using the factory attatchment point? Why would they make it that way? I look forward to this forums insights on this and probably many more questions from an AR newbie! Thanks!
If that is all the info that this guy provided you then he's doing a shitty job and is trying to come off like a know it all. You won't cause any damage to the barrel. With that said if you're applying downward/sideways force to the barrel while shooting, you can expect your accuracy to slip. What this guy was meant to say was if you're using the sling to pull the rifle in tighter then this will certainly happen. Depending on the distance of shooting you may or may not even notice.

I have the same model as you and been using the side mount sling attachment for past several years on my shooting; nothing like what he told you is truth. He is full of it. On side note, your accuracy maybe off due to pulling, but you wouldn't notice it. You are GTG
it wont damage anything, what it will do is interrupt harmonics of the barrel when it shoots and depending on where and how much pressure you apply to the sling will change point of impact
He may have mentioned about having tension on it would affect accuracy but over time would wear out and damage the barrel. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't causing any damage to my new rifle. I was able to put nice tight groups at 100yds with the sling on so I will continue my search for a better sling that works for me while retaining the factory attacthment point. Thanks for the input and putting my mind at ease
The only way to get around the sling tension affecting barrel harmonics is to use a free floated handguard and attach the sling to it rather than the barrel.
If you do not intend to primarily bench shoot the rifle, which the 6920 is not a bench shooting type rifle, then don't worry about it. You already said you had some nice groups so that is proof that the sling tension has a minimal affect in your instance at that distance.
You will not damage your barrel from any sling tension. Groups may suffer if and only if you have excessive sling tension on the barrel.
