I was looking at an ACOG 6x48 that was listed as a "Machine Gun" model, calibrated for .223 (TA648MG)

What features make this a "Machine Gun" model?

The mount and reticle look the same as the standard 223 6x48 ACOG.

Who's telling you it's a "Machine Gun Model"?

Trijicon lists one model with a 5.56 calibrated reticle. My guess is someone thinks it'll help them sell it.

The 6x's have been spun as replacements for The Elcan MGO (M145). I'd love to get one on a 249.

In my opinion, it would be fucking ginornmous on an M4/M16

It is... it's way, way too big. I think the 5.5X is much better suited to the M4/M16 platform.

Which is why it was designed to be a MGO (Machine Gun optic) the 6X can help get a burst on target for accurately at greater range... it was not really designed as a rifle or carbine optic as they already have one of those...

Plus I would venture it is build to withstand the recoli of a Belt feed MG...

But there will be some who buy them and put one on a Carbine....
