I'm having a local gunshop order a detachable Colt carry handle for me, and I want to make sure I'm getting a genuine Colt part. Is there a way to tell from the markings which brand makes a carry handle? Any specific marks on a Colt carry handle?

on the carry handle, no not really. You will find squares, "A"s, numbers, bird heads......all pretty common on most legit carry handles. I have a arms room full of ones taken off of real Colt M4s and the carry handles look pretty generic. There is no "C" like on the upper receiver.

yup, no C on colt carry handles... anyway milspec CHs are different from commercial ones...

- milspec is 0.835" from picatinny top surface to base of rear sight
- commercial is 0.795" from picatinny top surface to base of rear sight

A milspec carry handle would go with an F front sight base, I assume? If I'm putting a Colt carry handle on a 20'' BCM complete upper, would I be fine?

Mine came from Colt and has no marking I can find. Possibly something they sourced out. The one that came with my Armalite SPR has a 3 digit number and no other marks.

BCM and Colt have the same F type FSB so you should be good to go.
