Hey guys, I have some old pre ban magazines, I am trying to clean up, but leave the finish. They have some 100mph tape (duct tape) on them. Any ideas? Thanks Rafael

Zippo fluid is Naptha, i.e. "white gas".

Goo Gone or Goof Off, I forget, but one of those. Buy them at your local home improvement store.

Gets gum out of carpet as well.

As mentioned, regular old lighter fluid, Goof Off, or Goo Gone.
I'll add WD-40 to the list, it also works fairly well.

Goof Off/Goo Gone, straight acetone might harm the finish.
You can try gentle heat with a hair dryer too.

Automotive brake cleaner works wonders.

Straight acetone will remove dry film finish if you scrub it in. It's what I use to "strip" mags down to the anodizing for refinishing.

Naphtha is pretty safe and will soften most adhesives. It might wipe off some moly, but just the dry, loose stuff that would rub off anyway.

Goo Gone will get anything out of anything. Including month-old spar varnish from a frozen paintbrush.

Goo Gone will do it.

Anyone using duct/100mph tape should switch to "gaffer's tape".
The tape is flat black, tough and the adhesive is designed not to separate from the tape.
You will find it in some camera shops but will most likely need to order it.
Oh ya.......it's about $20 a roll.

Gaffer's tape is great stuff but it is designed for a somewhat narrow range of applications.
It isn't waterproof and doesn't stick well to wet surfaces.
It's designed to come off clean and not leave residue but if it bakes in the Sun or stays on for months it too,
will dry up, get crusty and leave a hard residue.

OP
Never had to remove that residue from mags but have removed it from a whole host of other items over the years. Mineral spirits has always worked just fine. It's a bit stinky (IMO, the low odor type is not as effective), but it gets the job done.

Another vote for Goof Off or Goo Gone. Works very well.

I have used some detachol that was left over from when my daughter went through her chemotherapy cycles. We used it to remove the adhesive that would remain on her skin from cleaning her central line. Works great but it brings back bad memories every time I use it on something.

Lemon Pledge. Spray it on, let is sit for 1 minute. Wipe it off. Will not mar the finish.

I used Goo Gone on some mags that had clearly been in the desert. Let them soak a little and use a rag or some shop towels.
