How to tell a pre ban USGI 30 rd. mag??
My friend has about 30 USGI 30 rd. magazines for AR15's. He bought them before and after the AWB. They're all supposed to be pre ban. Most don't have any dates on them. He's going to give me 6 of them for my new Stag model 1 (plus pkg). How can I prove they're pre ban if they do not have any dates stamped on them.
When I had my last AR15 I went to a place outside of Fort Drum and looked through a box and took the ones that had the date stamped on the "outside" of the magazine. Is there any differences between pre ban and post ban magazines that shows which is which? Being in New Yorkistan I don't want to get jammed up.
Thanks, NYH!
There is a preban thread like 2 post down.
No date stamp or MFG code, it's pre ban. If it's clean of any markings don't worry about it, on second thought don't worry about it.
That thread had more to do with mag followers when I looked at it.
No date or preban date on Universal, Colt, Okay, Simmonds, Adventure Line, Parsons, Labelle, Sanchez, Cooper, and Center are GTG. Dont know about steel mags.
Thanks. Aren't the USGI aluminum magazines better then steel magazines?

They are lighter, that's about it. If you can get some of the pre ban English Imperial Defense steel mags then upgrade them with a good anti tilt follower like the Magpul or C products you should have a very durable and reliable magazine.

Certainly more common. They are lighter and are sturdy enough for 99.99% of the people that use them. There are good magazines made from all types of material-aluminum, steel, stainless steel, and plastic.
If there is no date/markings I I would assume they are preban. Unlike what people might try to tell you they don't need to have a date stamped on them to prove they are old. None of my prebans has a date stamped on it and they are legal.
