Gold Dot Soft Point as a duty round?
Trying to pick a duty round. Most of the ballistic tips we have used have performed very poorly. Is the gold dot any better? unfortunately FMJ isn't a option no matter how poorly the 5.56 hollow points and ballistic tips perform

Yes, the Gold Dot is better. See the ammo FAQ's for best defensive ammunition.

No expert, but from what I've read, 5.56, yes. .223, not so much.
DBLTAP
The Gold Dot is a good round and will serve you well. We picked the Federal 62gr Tactical Bonded at my agency. It is an excellent performer.

Preferred means that you get extra velocity, which can help with shorter than 16" barrels and give the individual officer/civilian additional range.

Yes, .223 = not so much as 5.56

I don't think there are any red (polymer) tip rounds on the self-defense list for .223/5.56.

You used poor word choice because you give the appearance that BTB bullets in .223 are not any better than Ballistic Tips.
Dr. Roberts, as well as others, do not say this.

Actually, I meant to imply that 5.56 Gold Dots were among the better choices, while you can do better if limited to .223, and I believe that to be true. But I agree, I expressed myself poorly.
The 64 grainers are only available in .223 FWIW.
The 55s are still available in 5.56.

No worries. I think that it is easier for people to find the .223 Fusion ammo, even if you lose 100 fps +/-, as compared to the 5.56 rounds.
OP, the BTB rounds on the Defensive Ammo FAQ are fine.

Good they suck!!!!!!
Fusion bullets have a low velocity expansion threshold. 223 loading works well and is recommended by the Dr Roberts list.
Ok thanks for all the info!
The Gold Dot is a good bullet. Last I heard the 5.56 loadings were discontinued but the .223 loads are fine, just a little weaker. The Federal Fusion is basically the same bullet and also good.
