what one to buy for home defence?

Speer gold dots 5.56 or Federal 223, 55 grain Nosler Ballistic ammo? both about the same price. I am just having a hard time deciding?

What environment is your home in?
Unless your home is rather atypical, I would not choose a barrier penetration load like the Gold Dot for HD. Pick something with good terminal effects but reduced hazard from wall penetration, the 75gr TAP is generally the choice for that role.

Gamma said it best. Try to locate some tap 75 grains. Also take a look at the ammo oracle it has good suggestions based on your rifle and what threats may be faced.

I wouldnt have problems using my handgun for HD a P229 40sw loaded with win ranger 180gr T
Win Ranger T or B in 9mm,40sw,45acp can pass through common barriers.
Like wise I wouldnt have a problem using my M4 loaded with TSX for HD or any Soft Point
