I've never flown with ammo or firearm.
I called AA and asked about ammo..
I have 5 boxes of 223 ammo (about 3 1/2lbs) in the original boxes I wanted to bring with me on an upcoming trip..
I am not bringing an AR, I am shipping that to myself.
The girl said if I am not bringing a firearm.. and just the ammo.. she cannot find anything saying I need to
declare the ammo in itself..
I read the 2012 TSA release.. its says declare the firearm, and lists the 11lb limit for ammo..
I will be making sure I conform to the 11lbs and under and in original packaging.. fiberboard (cardboard) boxes..
Can anyone else confirm this.. (those whom have flown with just ammo as of late).. ??
Actually if you go
HERE
It says declare
the firearm.. and the ammo needs to be in checked baggage..
Then this page
HERE says in line 1 firearm and ammo..

Baggage EXPERT just confirmed via phone.. no need to declare if just ammo.. and its properly packaged and under 11lbs..

Is an "expert" one of those monkeys that "handle" your bags?
Good to know.

When I've traveled with a firearm and ammo I "ALWAYS" print and take with me the airlines I'm flying with rules/ regulations / policy for transporting arms and ammo on their aircraft. On several occasions the person behind the counter didn't have a clue as to what their companys regulations / rules were. Twice they were going to refuse to take my bag with the firearm and or ammo. I produced their company policy / rules and once they checked it everything was a go. Some airlines say the ammo has to be seperate from the firearm and others it didn't.
By having these documents with you they can and will help you a lot. MC
