Hey guys, I apologize for the newb question but i've never bought brass ammo for my ar15 before and I received 4 packs of XM 193 today but when I opened the first box, it seems like the brass is dirty or has discoloration around the neck. Is this normal?
This is normal for military-style brass. Federal XM ammo, IMI (Israeli MIlitary) ammo, Prvi Partizan, PMC X-Tac etc. will all exhibit this discoloration. It is because they don't polish the cartridges after they are pressed, which makes them look pretty for commercial sale but is not necessary for military use.
ah, thanks for the heads up! I don't care that it's not pretty like the commercial stuff, just wanted to make sure I didn't get a bad batch or something.

The discoloration around the neck of military rifle ammunition is from the annealing process (heating the case neck to soften it for the final forming). As mentioned, the military ammunition producers simply don't waste the resources to polish the brass the way ammunition producers do for the civilian market.
