Hey guys I am new to the site and new to owning and AR. I am about to make my first large ammo purchase and was trying to decide between Federal Lake City XM193 or PMC Bronze. The Federal is about $15 more for 500. Just wanted to get some others opinion. Thanks in advance.

Both are good. The Federal is probably a little hotter.

PMC is good, the Federal is better IMO.

Federal is good it is made in the USA. The PMC is allright but some if not all of it is made in Korea. If you bought a rifle new

read the paper work that came with it. Some waranties are void if you shoot ammo that was not made in USA.

I say go with the Federal if its only $15 difference.

Either you have found a good deal on the Federal (please share!) or a not so good deal on the PMC.

That said with no further information... buy the Federal.

5.56 ammo is hotter. Shoot that. .223 has less pressure. This is the major difference.

The federal is from a friend and he is going to sell me 500 rounds for $200. The PMC is from Cabelas and is a $180 shipped. Are these prices about right or are they high?
Thanks for the help.

Definitely. PMC is not very good, unless you like low pressure and large groups. YMMV

A bit high in my opinion. A quick scan of the AMMO DEALS thread shows Federal XM193BK is $319.99/1000 at Surplus Ammo. Add in shipping and you're probably at around $335/1000. You're friend is charging you 40-cents a round.

Your friend is high. You can find 500 rounds of Federal for $150 plus $20 shipping. I would tell him to sell it to you for $160/500 since it isn't factory fresh. Cabela's sells 20 rounds of Federal for $7.69 a piece.

Cabelas often has coupons for $20 off $100-$150 purchase. It has been awhile since I have seen a coupon, but wait for one. Also, Cabelas' typically doesn't pay to ship. They have a $5 shipping deal right now. Also, if you buy online with a discover card, you get 5% cash back.

Likely, I am guessing you will be buying elsewhere though.

Just going to piggyback on what has already been stated, your friend is really socking it to you... You can get Federal M855 green tip for about 359 on the web, I would hold out if I were you and just shop around the web... Just because they are people you know, doesn't always mean they are saving you money. He might have bought the ammo expensive himself. I usually spend a few days looking around trying to find the best deals before I purchase 3-4k lots.

When my gun double fed, PMC bullet was crooked and I couldn't use that round anymore. The federal has a tighter crimp around the neck so if your gun double feeds or jams, the bullet will stay in place and you can still use that round. Plus federal has cleaner powder, but I think their casing is a bit dirty b/c some of my federals have some black gunky spots on unfired cases. For me, PMC = plinking and Federal = shooting zombies

PMC is great. Federal is good too. $15 is another mag or two, so I'd get the PMC.

I agree, I like PMC Bronze .223 ammo. The Federal may be hotter since it is 5.56 as opposed to the PMC Bronze being .223, but what is your gun chambered? Is it a .223 barrel or a 5.56? You can shoot .223 in either .223 or 5.56 chambered barrel but it is not recommended you shoot 5.56 in a .223 chambered barrel. I have had great luck with PMC Bronze, it is clean, accurate, and reliable out of mu AR's, both in .223 and 5.56 chambered barrels. PMC Bronze has a reputation of being underpowered and slow, simply not true. Check the ballistics charts for it or run it through a good chronograph and find out for yourself, don't let armchair commandos relate untrue stories to you as true simply because they have heard them. I have not read nor heard anything good about the accuracy of Federal 5.56 or .223 ammo, in fact I have read about poor accuracy from it. But then again, that is only what I have heard and read, not established as truth for myself. I have however proven many times over that PMC Bronze is excellent ammo by actually shooting it. All the best of luck. First determine if your gun is a 5.56 or a .223, then perhaps buy a couple of 20 round boxes of each and shoot it for comparisoan yourself....<><....:)

Both are great although I personally prefer the XM193 as it's a little hotter than the PMC.

Never used the PMC but I use a lot of LC 5.56. Good ammo and never had issues. Neither one is going to be as accurate as match ammo.

So what do you have, a .5.56 chambered barrel or a .223 chambered barrel? that will have a LOT to do with which you buy and shoot in your AR. Let us know....<><....:)

It is a 5.56 barrel. I am going to go with the PMC I believe. It is cheaper and with the difference I will probably pick up a couple of mags. Thanks for all of the input.

Good choice, PMC brass is of excellent quality so save it for reloading, or if you don't reload (yet) save it for whe you start or for someone that does. After you shoot a bunch be sure to let us know how it worked out....<><....:)
