 1:8" twist and V-Max projectiles

Hey All,

I am looking for some good prairie dog/varmint ammo. Have found PMC 223 loaded with 40gr VMAX, Black Hills 223 w/ 40/50/60gr VMAX, and Georgia Arms Canned Heat 223 loaded with 55gr VMAX.

Upper is built by MSTN with 1X8" 3-GROOVE TWIST 18" SS Noveske barrel.

I have heard of issues with faster twists causing VMAX(and other lightly constructed varmint) bullets to come apart but my intuition tells me that this is probably only happening with either twist rates faster than 1:8 and/or with faster rounds than 223/556 like 22-250(although I have no direct experience with this twist/bullet combination).

I would prefer the 40gr(with 50gr being second choice) for prairie dogs but thought I would check here to see if anyone has experience shooting the PMC or Black Hills .223 w/ 40gr VMAX's out of a 1:8"(or faster) barrel. Or maybe anyone who has shot 40gr/50gr VMAX projectiles in 223 (or 556) out of a 1:8" barrel. Data I got off the net shows the PMC is gunning at 3650 fps (unsure of test barrel length).

Think there will be any issues with 40gr VMAX out of a 1:8" twist barrel?

Any experience/input appreciated.

Thanks!

Any help appreciated

Yet another Internet myth that just won't die. The 7-shot group pictured below was fired using hand-loaded Hornady 40 grain V-MAXs fired from an AR-15 with a 1:7" twist barrel.

Excellent. Thanks Molon! What velocity where those shots roughly? Guessing handloads? If not, can you tell me which round?

It's not the 40gr, but this is a group of Black Hills 50gr V-MAX from a 16" SuperiorBarrels "Amynta" 1:7 twist.

I've tested Black Hills, Fiocchi and Hornady 40gr V-max bullets with my 1:8 twist 24" bull barrel and have had zero problems. In fact the V-Max bullets shoot exceptionally accurate.
I've listed the velocities that are stated by the manufacturer as well (they were not chrono'd by me).

.223/5.56 Ammo Tests

Hope this helps.

I have shot exactly 5 rounds of Black Hills red box 50 grain VMax thru my 1-8" twist Predator upper. This was in a 15 mph left to right crosswind. I am waiting for a chance to see more results on a calmer day.
Here's the group:
