Read this if you own an M261 .22 conversion kit

Recently some of us were lucky enough to get a great deal on an M261 conversion from Francis. After shooting mine, I found out that the cartridge-shaped insert that fits into the chamber ( the part is referred to as the barrel ) has a tendency to crack near the case neck. Sarco sells replacement barrels for $75.00, but that was a little to steep for me. Being the type of person that likes to have spare parts on hand, I did some searching. I found out that Compass Lake Engineering sells a .22 upper that uses the M261, but it uses a dedicated barrel, so there is no need for the barrel on the M261. I contacted them, and sure enough, they had about 200 of them just laying around. They said no one had ever wanted to buy one before. I purchased a few, and they look almost new. A couple of them also have what looks to be a re-designed neck, which looks much less likely to crack. The best part is they only charged me $5 each. So if you are looking for one or just want a spare, give CLE a call.

Mike92GT,

Thanks for the heads up. I ordered 4 and they even threw in a free .22 brass catcher for the A2 receiver.

I noticed mine started to crack after about 50 rounds. Thanks for posting this, I just ordered 3 extra barrels. I can't believe Sarco wants $75 just for one! The phone number for Compass Lake Engineering is 850-579-1208, they are very friendly.

I have an AR15 with the M-261 and a dedicated .22 twist barrel… it's pinpoint tack driver! Easily matches custom target .22's live Volquartson's for accuraccy!

Only fault is no hi-caps…

I just ordered 2 today. Thanks for the heads up. I would hate to have to pay $75 to fix an $80 kit. The folks there were nice to deal with, too.

Looks like the price is now $10 each.

I had a feeling the price might go up slightly, they had no idea how much to charge at first since they had never sold one. Still a great deal on a hard to find part.

I bought 4 of these barrels from Compass Lake and compaired them to the one on my m261. The ones from Compass lake have had some of the case trimmed back. They are quite a bit shoter than the stock barrel. Have any of you noticed and or tried these barrels? It doesn't look safe to me. If there is that much gap between the m261 barrel and the real barrel it can't be good.

I have 2 complete M261 conversion kits, one I purchased here on the EE from Mohegan21 and the other I purchased in Texas from a very reputable dealer.

The two barrels on the left are from the M261 kits I purchased and the three barrels on the right were bought from CLE on 4/18/05 and arrived in the mail on Thursday 4/21/05. I can visually see no difference and a quick caliper check only shows a .009 spread from the shortest of the five barrels to the longest.

Checked two different M261 kits, one has the shorter barrel the other one is slightly longer.

Haven't noticed any difference in accuracy between the two using the same rifle, magazine, and ammunition.

I bought 5 barrels from CLE. Three of those look like they may have been trimmed back. I haven't tried them out, but I don't see why they wouldn't work. I had contacted Francis a while back about the barrels cracking. If I remember correctly, hesaid that trimming the barrels was a common practice.

It appears that CLE has increased the price to $23 each. Looks like good ole capitalism has kicked in. I just bought three kits from here and hope that mine aren't ones that need an immediate fix. I guess I'll find out shortly.

Yep, and as a good capitalist, knowing they were making money at $5, I say they can keep their inserts. I don't need one at one third the cost of the kit and mags.

How many of you guys had problems with the barrels cracking. Why are they cracking? Metal too soft/hard? If it does crack I can just trim it down and reuse. Correct?

Never heard of that nor seen it. They look pretty hard, heat treated, and plenty thick enough to me, especially supported by a chamber. Does a 22 LR impart that much pressure? I would like to see pics and evidence of this.

I have two of them that have cracked. I'm not sure why they do that. The ones I have both cracked at the very end, which is the thinest part. I guess you could call it the case mouth. They were also pretty well used. Were just talking about a small crack, not a large split in the case or anything like that.

Mine cracked. I'll try and get a picture of it if I can borrow a friends digital camera. I ended up ordering a replacement from them for $10 plus shipping but I think I'll trim the split part off of the old one to have a spare.

I just called CLE and ordered 3 barrels. They charged me $10.00 each and they threw in a free brass catcher! So, the price is very reasonable.
