Troy Industries Ambidextrous Magazine Release
Troy Industries Ambidextrous Magazine Release
From the Troy Industries site:
Ambidextrous Magazine Release replicates the feel and length of a standard magazine release button to accommodate left-handed shooters.

Good clean pics.

nice

Pics of the back side? Does it fulcrum against the receiver to work?

It sure looks like it. I would worry about the wear myself. Input please Troy.
Im digging it!
How easy is it to release a full mag with the bolt closed?
How easy is that to install?
I got mine last night. Yes, it does fulcrum against the receiver, but it's so rounded and smooth I do not see how it could cause significant wear on teh receiver.

Instillation should be a piece of cake. Push the mag release all the way in, and untwist the old one, then screw the new one in. It should take 3 minutes, and require no tools.

Really? Wow. Just wow.

Then it is not marketed towards you, and no I'm not being a dick.
I must get one.

How much pressure is needed to actuate it?

Not anything more than a bolt catch release with the bolt held open.
On my list.
Is it sufficiently guarded from accidental release if the rifle is laid on it side?, or it gets bumped around (like in a trunk)? It looks like it relies on enough lever motion to prevent that, unlike the original straight push design which needs the fence to prevent those accidents. Looking at it, the bolt release and magwell lip may protect it when flat...
Looks great...too bad that we can't put one of those on our guns here in California

Hi,
CA even prohibits mods like this? Amazing.
Lived there (OC) while in the Corps. Used to think it a paradise, now you couldn't pay me to live out there.

No it doesn't, just another person that doesn't understand the law.
I've lived everywhere else (most of the US, Europe, Asia and parts of the Middle East) and there are not many places I would move to now.

Installing this on an AR in CA would result in the magazine being removable without tools.
would like to hear someones hands on review of this unit, looks promising...

Which is not illegal providing you either have a preban or a rifle with none of the banned features.
I'm wondering if it digs into the lower receiver when used since it looks like a push method.. unless it's designed to have your finger go under it and push it out.
I through up in my mouth a little when I saw the $60 price tag!

Why? It's less expensive than a norgon catch
The Norgon works great, I have had one for 15 years, this should be good as well although it may eventually wear a small spot in the black phosphate coating on your safe queen rifle. If you really shoot your rifle (carbine) and are left-handed OR smart enough to concider that your right hand could actually be wounded one day this kind of thing is a great idea.

I'm the same way. Don't you just love being cross-eye dominant? I can still shot rifles right handed fine but I am more accurate lefty.

One thing I have noticed is it seems to be alot easier for me to do accurate support side firing than my counterparts.
Gosh, this is one of those things that makes you say, "why didn't I of think of that?"
Looks like an easy install and great design. Gonna have to try it!

Yeah, I didn't have nearly as much trouble as anyone else during CQB training when rounding different types of corners. My groups are around 4" when shooting right handed and about 2-3" when shooting lefty. Yeah I know, I still need work on my markmanship.
Erik,
Thanks for heads up and photos. I would like to see flip side photo of Troy ambidextrous magazine release. I have Norgon, and I am interested in the comparison at lesser (Troy) price.
I am a southpaw, and I really appreciate the left handed approach!

I just got mine. If you want I can post pics of it tonight before I toss it in my carbine and do shoulder rolls.

Yes, but it IS illegal if you don't, so you can't just assume he doesn't understand the law because neither you nor I know which of the thee categories his AR might fall into...

No we don't know the category. Why make the statement if you are not going to try to educate someone about why it is illegal. Another legal use would be on a rimfire AR as they do not fall under the AW laws and can have a detachable mag. Actually, why even comment on california gun laws if you don't live here?

As you said... why make a statement like this instead of trying to educate the guy.
No it doesn't, just another person that doesn't understand the law.
Poor guy has 21 posts. Maybe he is misinformed... You told him he didn't know what the heck he was talking about, then you bragged about living all over the world... but you didn't bother to help him better understand the laws in the state you both live in.
Agrippap: Where did you get yours? Every time I look on Troy's web site they are not in stock. I am still waiting (three weeks so far) for my Troy BattleAx Grip.

Yep, AIM had 6 left when I ordered.
Ok. This needs to be standard equipment on every AR in the free world. ALL my ARs will have these.
Why do they over price these items??? Norgon and now troy. Although not as expensive as the norgon but still ridiculous. Its like they are trying to price gauge us because we are left handed shooters and we are being punished for it or something. But of course gun owners will proudly give their money away. I bet if this was $150 bucks it would sell like hot cakes. Hell why not i'm sure people with buy it for a tiny piece of metal.
Plus it seems like the troy version will put some wear on the finish of your lower rec which will suck. You get ripped off and get some finish scratched off at the same time. But this won't apply to me because I live in free gun state of CA

.
But technically if I don't have the pistol grip on my ar, I believe I could use the ambi mag release. But i'm not so sure about it.

Te back of the button is angled, as you can see, and it merely pivots when you press it, levering the mechanism outward. It is no harder than pushing in the mag release button in.
Being a lefty really slows down my mag changes. I have always felt this was a weak spot, and the Troy release brings me up to speed with the rightys, or at least allows me the chance to train up to that speed. I really, REALLY like it.

Can anyone show a picture of how much space is between it and the receiver?
Just got a delivery tracking Email from Troy saying mine shipped this morning. Sounds like Troy has them in stock now.

I'm at work now, but I can post a pic of it installed tonight.
