Nice.

How about following it with a government profile mid-length?

How do melonite barrels compare to chrome lined, stainless steel etc?

Approximate average lifespan of the barrel? I know there are alot of factors that contribute to barrel life but im still wondering anyway. :)

What is the expected accuracy on these uppers? Is there any sort of accuracy guarantee?

I have an agreement to not mention any names but they are made by a government contactor, and the quality is as good as it gets.

Accuracy is insane. Easily on par with an N4 barrel, maybe even better.

Tom, what's the deal with barrel life on a Melonite treated barrel that's not chrome lined? Any guess? Obviously defendant on firing schedule but how does it rate against a regular chrome lined barrel?

Maybe Saber?

So Badazzar15, does "Accuracy is insane." mean I can be sure of sub 2 MOA?

Also, can we order these minus hand guards, BCG, and charging handle?

If I can order one sans BCG, CH, and handguard then I'll be all over one.

I have a melonite treated barrel that is 5 or 6 years old (maybe even a little older), it was a prototype and didn't go into production. I have used it for heavy CQC drills, FA work, as a general training upper, and carried it as an upper on my duty weapon. Its currently loaned to another officer who is using it for his duty upper. I've never seen a barrel taken abuse like this barrel has, and still look and group this well.

This doesn't directly answer your question in regards to the Spikes barrel, but I have had solid results from mine.

Its honestly the most consistent and durable finish I have ever seen or used. By the looks of things the first batch will be sold out before the end of the weekend!

Stick,

Thanks for the insight.

I have one more question if you dont mind. I have a couple S&W M&P's and ive had some rust issues. If i recall correctly those guns are melonite coated. Have you noticed any rusting with your barrel? Do these barrels require more cleaning than say a chrome lined barrel? Any special care involved?

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions!

No rust issues on my older barrel, and no rust issues on any of the Glocks (personal or various departments) that I've seen unless there is extreme abuse.

Melonite and Tennifer are both salt bath nitride finishes, and if they aren't exactly the same, are at least quite similar. You can check out the below link for a little additional info. The biggest thing to remember is that just because they are the same finish, it doesn't mean the process is the same. This is why you may see an issue with one, and not with another.

I hope this helps a little.

Glad to be of help, I talked to a few people about it yesterday, and they commented it as like painting a car. Two different shops use the same paint, but there are a lot of variables in prep and application that can produce two very different results.

My own opinion is that melonite style applications have come a long way in the past couple years.

I have heard that when stainless steel is treated with the Melonite process it actually reduces its corrosion resistance. Chrome moly, however, when Melonited becomes much more corrosion resistant lasting somewhere around 300 hours in a mil-spec salt spray test. M&Ps are stainless so that may be why they do get some rust.

For people who aren't familiar, here is some info off the Spikes website.

http://www.spikestactical.com/z/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=24&products_id=201&zenid=s6j31a4nroh0dn0vmd2ourli55

Each buffer is filled with HDTP "High Density Tungsten Powder" so there is No reciprocating weights inside to make any noise. It also makes for a Very Smooth cycling rifle. It eliminates the chance of bolt bounce and muzzle rise in full-auto. It also cuts down on Felt Recoil. It's a HUGE upgrade from a Standard Carbine buffer! It's designed for .223/5.56 but it works in all Calibers!

After its filled with HDTP it's topped off with a mil spec bumper!

Here are some weights I came up with to compare to. These weights may vary from mfg. to mfg. or from one scale to another.

Standard CMT carbine buffer - 2.9 oz.

CMT H buffer - 3.8 oz.

CMT H2 buffer - 4.1 oz.

ST-T2 - 4.3oz.

Armalite H3 buffer - 4.7 oz.

If this is made from quality parts, it seems like a great deal.

BCM Upper 475
BCM BCG 160
Charging Handle 20
M4 Handguard 20
H3 Buffer 40
That's $715, not including taxes and shipping. $10 more for a hammer forged melonite barrel. Hard to argue with that price.

I went ahead and ordered one. I hope it turns out nice.
