How would you go?
So I've got my 14.5" middy barrel for my middy-E2 build, and I've dropped my LPK into my spare A2 lower (for now, I'll get a proper A1 lower from NDS just as soon as they have them again, unless I can find one on the EE), but I'm curious.
Should I have the barrel cut back, so the gap between the FSB and the rear of the grenade ring are the same as on a carbine-gas E2, or should I leave more gap there so that the sort of overall perspective is the same? Since the gas system & handguards are stretched out, maybe more gap between the FSB and ring might look more balanced. I don't want to cut the barrel down too much, obviously; I'm trying to stay pretty close to the 14.5" performance envelope, which is why I'm going middy instead of a 12.75" CAR gassed barrel.
What do you guys thing would look "better"?
Also, do you think removing the forging flash from the FSB might be weird? It's not retro-correct for an XM177, being more of a like, 601/602/Early 603 thing. But it looks so much nicer that way. Since it's most likely going off to ADCO for the pin job, while its there I might as well have them do the FSB too.
I think a cut down would probably look better, but that's really up to you. Maybe you should leave it as is and see how it looks with the mod on there, and cut it if the length bugs you before you pin/weld the mod.
Oh and go ahead and remove the flashing on the FSB, the XM177E2's had smooth ones, as did the GAU-5/A/A.

Outstanding.
That's probably a good idea, and if I decide to get it cut down after all, I'll have to remember to take some before/after pictures so maybe in the future they can be of reference to someone trying to make the same decision.
Do what little I can to give back to all the knowledge around here.
The whole advantage of the Middy cutdown from what I get, is that you get the XM177E1 look while still making it legal. I strongly considered doing it this way, but decided I really wanted to make one last 'correct' clone and make the XM177E1 as close to original as I could - so I'm going the SBR route. The irony is I culd pay for the barrel and barrel work with the extra money I'm giving the .gov and likely have a nicer recoiling and non-NFA weapon. Maybe some guys will post some pics here of their builds to help you make up your mind. If you don't cut the barrel, with the moderator it's going to seem long IMO unless you use a slipover...which might be a good way to go. I think Bushmaster still makes a ltwt version, but getting them to actually ship you one might take awhile. I think you end up with a 1/2" or so of barrel showing either way on a 16" OAL IIRC.
yes, if you use the middy gas the whole point is to get the moderator closer the fsb.
(not mine, but one of my faves)

I have a 14.5 middy LW too, I have someone machining me a custom 4.5 slip over that will get it to legal length and still be butted to the FSB.

In reference to the recent 'what would you like' thread, this is the kind of part I wish was more readily available. Perhaps it's better that it's not - everyone would have one!

I would be one of the "everyone" for sure!
