605 build question
Need a little advice, I'm not sure what the better way to go
With my 605 barrel would be.
A carbine lengh barrel with a low pro gas block hidden under the
Hand gaurd or a 20" cut down? Iether way I might make it piston driven

depends on how correct you want it to be. both will require some gunsmithing.
also are you going for 16" at the end of the threads or 16" w/ the flash hider permanently attached? if you want it 16" with the flash hider attached, add the cost of cutting and rethreading to the 16" barrel as well as the 20".
16" w/ lo pro or shaved gas block and a new HG cap and FSB using set screws - cheapest method
16" w/ lo pro or shaved gas block and a new HG cap and FSB drilled and taper pinned
20" cut down and gas port opened
also piston setups require more clearance under the handguards so your A1 HGs might not work with a piston.
Not meaning to steal the thread, but, the OP may end up with the same questions. I,m putting together my version of a 605 on the "cheapo" with my spare parts. It has a 16" carbine barrel, and carbine gas tube. Do i have to use a carbine buffer and carbine buffer spring, with some kind of spacer in the type D stock? or can i use a rifle length spring and buffer as in the pic?

Ya I could take or leave the piston set up, just think it would be cool.
I wont attach the FSB with set screw on a carbine barrel, cuz that's just not right :)
But the downside of that is the hidden gas block can no longer be removed.
If needed.
The flash hider? My first thought was to pin and weld it 16" to fsb to keep it legal and original
Looking. But I thought I might want to put a suppressor on it
So I will need to be able to remove the three prong.

Good question
you can run a carbine upper/barrel w/ a fixed stock. you just want to make sure you use the correct spring/buffer w/ the correct tube/receiver extension.

Thanks for the repy boywonder, but, i,m a little confused. You say the correct buffer and buffer tube? Well, that is my question. What would be the correct buffer and buffer tube? What i have in the pic is a standard rifle tube and a standard rifle buffer. Would that be OK? or am i missing something?

what you have in the pic will work.
by correct buffer/spring to the tube i mean:
rifle length spring and buffer for buffer tubes (fixed a1/a2 stocks)
carbine length spring and buffer for receiver extension (collapsible stocks)
they are not cross compatible. a carbine buffer in a rifle length system may cause damage to the lower parts as it has a lot more travel at the end and more momentum going forward. a rifle buffer in a carbine may not cycle as the bolt carrier can't complete the full rearward travel as the rifle buffer is longer.
Is there any advantage in using a 20" over a 16"?
Or vise- versaz.

16" gas port won't need to be opened up. 20" will.
We've seen other 605's built to clone the originals, and they seem to run fine.....until it gets cold, which is one reason why the 605 never saw widespread adoption, even though it has an ideal profile for light infantry work.
This is why I have chosen to go with a carbine-length gas system with mine.
The carbines tend to run much better and smoother with a rifle-length extension tube, recoil spring, and buffer, as the carbine telescoping stock recoil/buffer system is a compromise.
