Who else
Would like to see NoDak start producing 656 uppers.
ETA: wrong model number originally
Would really love to see the Prototype Armalite Lower 1st
Help me out with a picture or something. I'm not finding anything.

Sorry I meant a 656 the original flattop
That would be cool, but I doubt NDS would have enough takers to justify the investment...
That makes more sense. I imagine if the market were big enough (read: HUGE) they'd do it. You got to have a bunch of commitment for that kind of initial financial outlay though. And NDS has produced product before that didn't meet their expected sales, so I imagine they're pretty careful about something like this.
that would be beyond cool

i've wanted one for years, maybe offer it as a limited run at $XXX per unit and presell them?
if they do i'll commit to buying one!!!!
I'd like it more if they came out with a true 601-type upper (no windage markings, & the receiver is cut-out to line-up @ the lower aft port-door section). Now that - I'd pre-order...

If we can get enough support I will repost in the NDS forum
I'm in for one, but what do we do about the unique FSB?
Mike has already stated that it's extremely unlikely that they will ever offer this. They would never recoup the money on their investment for the tooling. my65pan built one for a member here, but it was quite a project - I doubt he'd ever do it again - but I could be wrong on all counts. Definitely a cool variant. I just never understood how the sights lined up. The rear sight must have been a pop-up somehow. There is a thread my65pan posted awhile back - likely in archives by now.
The archive thread was just reposted in the new
Retro sniper rifle thread.

Clicky-the-linky and it's about half-way down the first page.
My65Span's Colt 656 Mod to M16A1 Upper Thread:
http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_123/515487_656_questions.html
Barstock milled rail epoxied to a milled down M16A1 upper, just like Colt made the 656 prototypes vs having special forging die made ($20,000 to $25,000)
If i could get the milled rail I would make my own probably tig it together, I have a plan for one of these a dissy barrel and my old school aimpoint.

HEY - THAT'S MY IDEA!

I think it woild be great if they did, but I can unerstand why the cost would be an issue.
Ever since Blondie bought me the coffee mug with different ARs pictured on it I have been staring at the 656 on it!

Let's be clear here...NDS doesn't *make* the receivers...The forge does...They have a minimum order requirement...If we go by NDS's past offerings, they'd need 200 firm orders to get a forging done...OK, maybe they only pay $20 apiece for the raw forgings...That's $4,000...Pocket change for Harlan, maybe, but I doubt Mike has that much in his Levi's...
...And then they need to be machined...and engraved...and anodized...
That's on top of making & developing a prototype...and we know what that all entails, don't we???
I wouldn't mind seeing it come to pass...But I'd bet on a repeal of the Sullivan Law first...

getting the die made is the pricey part. for even a small part it's at least $2500 and that's with cnc technology dropping the cost.

The rear aperture was a flip up BUIS - I want to say he used a Hahn aperture? But I don't remember, it was in the thread, though, IIRC.
ETA: Nevermind, it looks like he custom made the rear sight.

This^^^ plus I'll add,,we (anyone who has made parts available) have found that ONLY about 30% of folks who say "I'll definitely take" follow up and DO pay and take. So,,unless MANY (whatever the minimum order to the forge is) members are willing to pay up front,be willing to wait,I doubt NDS will even entertain the thought of doing them.I don't blame them one bit...
The forging dies would be between $11,000-$16,000 I figure.
It would be easier to make it out of billet right now. (or take a 603 forging and splice them together)
And yes, I am still working on the Proto lower. I had my machinist do a 601 w/o the broach cut on the left side of the magwell.
Once they are finished I'll play with it on the old guy mill.

I would be happy if they could leave the Brunton bump off a current flat-top

I am thinking this would be the best option, I wonder if 65pan still has the cnc data.
You can buy flat top 9mm uppers, and have Adco or someone cut the gas tube hole.
I was thinking about drilling one myself, but I understand they need to be cut for the cam pin as well? Love to know the truth. I can drill a damn hole, but I need help with internal machining. I've heard some people say yes, some people say no - what's the absolute truth on this anyone know?
I would think you could make a extrusion die of the profile and machine it from there. A extrusion die is prettty cheap but there would still be a bit of machining to do.
I just read through the my65span 656 build, and that is some black rifle artistry right there gents. That was impressive, to say the least. Billet CNC would be the most economical way to go for a 656.
If I could get the cad id like to try and make one.

The cam pin cut is already there on a MS1 or RRA... I went with RRA because MS1 was out of stock....that is the absolute truth

And a picture to prove it - M1S 9mm upper with gas hole drilled by me. That is a Colt 5.56 bolt and carrier shown in the upper and it works just fine.

Thanks guys - I've been considering one of those for a build for some time - good to know the truth.
