 Retro Sniper Rifles....Let's see 'em!

We've seen plenty of retro AR's, shotguns and pistols, I thought it would be nice to see some retro sniper rifles.

I'll get it started with my favorite bolt gun. Remington M1903A4, fitted with an M82. It is a Z prefix serial in the early 4 million range. She has an original barrel dated 9-43, despite having made two trips through arsenal rebuilds. The stock is original with all the random Remington proofs, has RIA rework marks as well as AAC rework marks. Stock has been sanded a bit, but is still in pretty nice shape. Also despite the double rework, it seems the majority of the internals are original, or at least correct as well.

If only this baby could talk! I suspect it likely saw action in WWII, Korea, and maybe even Vietnam. Love this gun, I only wish I knew more of its specific history.

Here's a couple quick pics. I'll try to get more up sometime, but she's buried in the safe, so it's a PITA to get her out.

Enjoy, and let's see your retro sniper rifles!

Yes it's a 6 power Nimrod, nice piece of glass. I love those 03A4s, I really can't figure out why I don't have one.
I hate to say it but I don't think we are posting in the right forum with these, but I can't resist joining in. To be correct we should be showing ARs with scopes, although I couldn't name an AR sniper setup.

Did anybody ever post pictures of that elaborate 656 clone that one of our members was building for a guy? I can't remember who it was, but he did a lot of nice work making the upper and front sight. I would really like to see how that turned out.

Well, I guess I would consider retro to be made or used roughly in the Vietnam era, or used in Vietnam. Give it +/- 5 years on the Vietnam "era", just for some flexibility. Call it '55-ish to '80-ish, roughly-ish.

My 03A4 is technically a WWII rifle, but it lived on to be used in the "retro" era. I'm not too picky with that kinda stuff.

ETA: Some topics that have been generally accepted in this land of retro have included Uzi's, shotguns of various vintages, sidearms, typically post-WWII M1911A1 reworks or clones, and more. All have been considered "retro", so I think the parameters have already been established loosely. I personally don't have a problem with it, and consider these other genres to be retro, and very interesting to read and learn about.

Besides, whether it's retro or not, who doesn't like gun porn?

Yes, that turned out really nice. Have you looked into finding an old Sionics suppressor for it? The Ceiner copy of those suppressors used to sell pretty cheap, not sure how scarce they are now.

Who needs those fancy wood & steel guns when even the basic 601 is "unsurpassed as a Sniper Rifle"?
(Well, according to the early Colt-Armalite brochure, at least.)

Very nice stuff fellas!

Is it me, or does anyone else think that the rear sight on the 656 is on a lower plane that the front sight?

Regardless, it is one bad m-f-er!

Oh, and I can only assume someone custom made that upper, you can't just buy one. I don't think Colt even made any more than a handful.

Forgive me if I am wrong, but that looks like a John Thomas job to me.

OK; here's my M40 clone I've been working on for a couple of years now. Built on a 1966 Remington 700 receiver in the correct serial number range (but NOT an original M40) with the correct clip-slotting done by Mike Lau at TBA, the correct type and year scope that has been duracoated green (as the anodized originals sell for more than I have in the entire rifle!), a Badger square-corner pre-suffix base and original rings, the correct spilt-sear trigger and tombstone safety, a custom-turned 1/10 twist Douglas barrel, and a lot of time and effort. No; it's not 100% accurate, but I built it to be a clone, not a "fake original" so a few minor details here and there are OK by me. I still need to get the bolt body blued, and then take it out shooting. But here it is:

You're welcome, and glad to be of help. Mine's still not quite 100% finished yet, though. Not until I get that bolt body reblued. After that, I *MAY* decide to go ahead and bed it and free float the barrel. Even though the factory didn't do them that way, supposedly it was not unheard of once they arrived in country. Plus, it would probably help squeeze a bit more accuracy out of it.

I can't remember offhand if I ever posted it over there on the Hide or not, but up until a few months ago I also had a pretty close clone of another Vietnam era sniper; the XM-21. Sold it to pay for a Vickers semi-auto that I am now in the process of trying to sell on GB. Here's a picture of it too, since it goes with this thread.

I'm luving it!!!! ^^^^ I'm poking around for a correct Redfield AR-TEL scope,,right now one of mine has the early M84 set up on an all TRW 1966 period correct NM spec with Armscorp receiver, the other has a Leatherwood AR 11,also all TRW,w/SAK NM barrel 1972 period correct NM spec also on Armscorp,,,and last one has the AN-PVS-2.Samie samie, all TRW,but standard parts on Armscorp. Been hanging out on the fire line and learned a few things that are making me "tweek" 2 of the 3 to be more "Nam" correct.
