passed down gift from dad
I know this is the retro AR section, but I wanted to share something that passed into my hands after my dad passed away last month. Figured you all might appreciate it.
It is a Navy Mark 1 Kabar with a 5 inch blade made by Camillus blades in NY.
He bought it for a quarter as a 16 year old right after WW2, and his dad (my grandfather) took it away from him and told my dad he could have it upon his death…MY dad told me the same thing – that I could take possession of it once he passed…guess it is mine now. Glad I have a son I can pass it along to. Funny how small things turn into family heirlooms
Anyway – here it is.

cool knife..may i ask why it was taken away from him?
Again my condolences and a very nice blade. I cringe at the thought of facing similar circumstances. Doubt I'll be getting anything except the cleanup without any heirs (parents beliefs) and very greedy siblings (one being a lawyer, democrat politician and a bonafide thief) but I do still get to enjoy my parents presence on a regular basis which my siblings don't. Unfortunately dementia is starting to set in. I do have a couple Camillus pocket blades US marked that I bought new and for cheap 30 plus yrs ago but nothing like that. Was thinking about buying one of the Navy marked survival blades from Charleyssurplus in the near future.

I believe my grandfather just wanted the knife...or my dad was a 16 year old punk!
I grew up 15 miles from the Camillus factory and have several of their knives. They really made good stuff. The heirloom thing is cool - sorry to hear about your dad, but I wish I had a son or daughter to pass things down to.

Want one or two? Try feeding a teenage waterpolo player. Cuts into my gun operating fund a lot!

Morg, you wanna adopt a 41 y/o?
OP: Sorry for your loss but it makes for a good story and something to pass down from generation to generation along with the story. It's great when things with more sentimental value than actual value become what heirs are arguing over at least. (not to imply you guys were arguing over it or anything)
Condolences Fastswift. May he rest easy in Gods hands.
All I've gotten from my dad is his bad hair and attitude :)
Sorry for you're loss
Sorry to hear of your fathers passing.
Your treasure has an awesome story and I hope both the knife and the story always remain with your family.
My uncle had a similar thing happen to him. When he was a little kid he bought a buck knife mail order. Shortly after the knife arrived he got in big trouble with his parents and as punishment they took away his new knife. After his mom passed he found his old but still new in the box knife that he had long forgotten. While at a SHOT Show he told the story to a guy at the Buck Knives booth. It turned out to be an old rare model they did not have for their museum collection. He ended up trading it for an expensive modern semi-custom . I think he should have held onto it for it's sentimental history.
I used to buy my dad a new Buck knife every x-mas and he never used any of them. Said they were to nice to use. Wonder if he even knows where they are? He still has his old Boker. Bet that thing is over 60 yrs old and some of those Buck's have to be 35-40 yrs old. Don't remember buying anything special just out the case at the A&N.
