 605 finish options???

So my original thread asking about the 605 has been archived––archived thread

I have all my parts for this build ready to go and now I need to refinish the parts. This will be a faux green 605 for now as I love the color and dissy style equally. I have red primer, leather brown and testors fs 34079 for the stock, handguards, and grip. I have a freshly anodized flat handguard ring and a old charging handle that is very close in color. I also found a colt buffer tube that matches the upper, charging handle, and ring very nicely. My upper is really in good condition and I'm unsure if I will coat it. It will probably come down to how well it matches the coating on the lower.

So my questions is what is everyone using for colors/brand for doing this? I recently used cerakote and after baking this stuff is as tough as it gets but I'm not seeing a color that matches the colt grey. Was thinking of using this "park" coating for the barrel, fsb, and flash hider. Any opinions on this choice?

What should be used for the aluminum (receivers)???

Hey cohrs, wish i had a better pic of the 605ish i,m working on. Isnt the ceracote a moly resin finish, similar to John Norrells moly-resin? I,ve used the Norrells on all of the steel parts and the upper and lower with no problem. The color is lighter than the XM Gray, but, i still like it. Why cant you use your cerekote on the upper and lower? This pic of the lower rifle is not as light as it appears, (must be the flash) Good luck.

Victor @ US Anodizing I'd the way to go. I am sending my freshly milled GM replica lower and maybe a couple other parts off to him in the next week. I'd say that's your best option as far as durability and aesthetics.

There are other options, Norrell's Moly Resin is a popular finish among us retro folk as well. But IMO, you can't beat anodizing.

YMMV

Your picture link is not working. The only color I have on cerakote is OD green and I think cerakote is similar to the moly resin. I don't want to buy a bunch of coatings and have it come out wrong as that could get expensive. I do have some matte gunkote left. Maybe I could get some gray gunkote and use the black to darken it??

No offense but I want to do it myself. I agree you can't beat anodizing but I have a good refinishing set up now and like I said the cerakote is pretty amazing.

Hey no offense taken. It wasn't clear to me from your OP that you were set on doing it yourself. If you like the cerakote and have a good setup for it, go for it. I personally have no experience with it, but of it works for you, git er dun.

Yes. I even took a M4 barrel and reprofiled it to .625" right up to the front of the gas block just to use my old raggity and pitted fsb. Left the length as is which kind of stinks but will be easier for now and more importantly legal.

Don't know if it is just the glare but that seems alot lighter than the pictures I posted? Is it really that light?

Is that a child-proof cap on that buffer tube?

It was on the stock set I got that was in storage for years. Don't know who made it but kind of a neat peice as it came with the stock pictured.

Is there any guidance on what products/ colors to use for this?

I really like Cerakote. I'm also working on a 605 that will be used as a blaster, so I want a tough finish that is also close to XM grey. Here's an XM177E2 I'm working on next to a Colt SP-1 upper:

You can make the shade darker with Graphite black cerakote, but I really like the receivers on the more grey side. You can also add that tint of OD green that many receivers had in the Vietnam Era.

If you go the Norrells route, get gray-black flat its dead on color wise to "xm gray"

The lower is Moly resin, the upper is stock Nodak.

I see it clearly displayed ike the others. Are you on a hand-held, or PC/Laptop?

That Norell's does look good.
