 Wood stock set

I've posted this on the BIY forum but thought I would also try here; I know at least one retro member posted pictures of a wooden stocked carbine.

Does anyone have any experience with Precision Firearms' Oil Finish Walnut AR-15 Kit? Or perhaps any of their wood stock kits.

They look nice on the web page but I would like to hear from someone who has a set before I send in my money.

Thanks

If you want wood furniture for your AR check out Ironwood designs. I saw their stock kit in person and it looked excellent. I also had one of their wood kits on an FAL.

I have an ol' rifle set of IRONWOOD that has the tri-HGs. They need to have a finish applied. At the time I purchased 'em , they didn't offer a carbine set. May have to see if I can grab a pair of the 'bines HGs...

Can't help ya the the Precision set, but the Ironwoods are excellent!

GB beat me to it...

there's a used set of Ironwood's on the EE, or you can spend less than half of that asking price and get a new set from RRA

Do you think my 607 RR would look good wearing wood?

Is there any other vendor besides IRONWOOD that sell triangular hand guards? I would like to buy a set but Ironwood isn't cheap and unfinished. I don't like the round hand guards set which is readily available for $150. Thanks.

AR 15 Wood Stocks (http://www.ar15woodstocks.com/) has a "sort of" triangular handguard set. Their package sells for $189 but I don't really like the pistol grip or the handguards. Precision's pistol grip and handguard looks very similar to AR 15 Wood Stocks.

I must say the Ironwood set looks terrific and I do like the pistol grip and handguards; just a bit pricey though.

Will it stop you from chopping up more A1 hand guards?

I agree, Ironwood are the only wood sets that look good. I find the others ugly....<><....:)

The Ironwood sets are not very difficult to finish. I'm seriously considering (but have yet to muster the nerve) cutting these HGs down to carbine size to use with a 607 rear cap:

A buttstock cut down for a 607 would be so cool too.
I have to vote YES for a complete wood 607.

Olgunner picked up a set of walnut HGs for his son's .22 carbine that I had the opportunity to handle - I really liked them and didn't think I wood. They are out there if you look for them. I recently sent him a link to an auction for some black walnut furniture for his Coltguard finished SP1 - if you've never seen one wearing wood furniture, you'd be amazed how nice they look.

Thanks for the info on the other producers. I think I'll save my money and go for the Ironwood stock set.

The most beautiful wooden-furnitured (is that a word? ) I've ever seen.

ETA: It has an early 604 upper as well.

Russ, that's one gorgeous AR. Would ya share what finish you used?

ID is currently out of stock of the carbine HGs, but should have some in the near future. I know I'll have to get a set!

That looks great. How much heavier is the rifle with the wood hand guard?

Thanks for the compliments guys.

Not sure if you want to know the finish on the wood or the receivers.

The wood stocks as received from Ironwood are already quite smooth. I did finish sand all the outer surfaces down to 220 grit paper. The stain is 3 applications of Watco Black Walnut followed by about 10 applications of Watco Natural Oil finish. I don't like shiny looking wood, so the Watco leaves a nice satin luster.

I lightly sandblasted the outer surface of both receivers so they had the same surface texture. Both are sprayed with Norrell's Moly Resin in their Colt's gray color. This finish requires baking at 300 degrees to cure the finish. This stuff is really hard and resists about every chemical solvent known to man except epoxy paint stripper. I highly recommend it as any inexpensive alternative to proper anodizing.

Can anyone give an estimate of how much heavier the wood stock set is over a standard A1 set?

Perhaps about 12 to 14 ounces heavier than plastic.

I have been thinking of the wood stock set for years, and think it may be time to go for it.
I contacted Matt @ Ironwood for a quote on tiger stripe......it adds $190 to the price, so Im probably going to stick with plain/standard Walnut.
If it had been $100 additional I would go for the tiger stripe. I have sorted thru closets and boxes and came up with the parts for the rifle, so I'm gtg.
Any one else ordering from Ironwood????

… I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE wood on an AR!… Or any “black rifle” for that matter. I’ve posted all these pics before on ARF of project rifles that I’ve built over the years so I apologize in advance if I’m boring anyone w/ them… Wood totally floats my boat!

your all heart...Merry CHRISTmas and thanks for the generosity. I hope some one sends you a set. I also hope they send me a set, with or without a Coltguard AR, I will live with my "black" rifle if I have to....

Thanks for the nice compliments on my rifle. I'm lucky in the respect that Ironwood Designs
is located in the same village I live in. I think Matt Schuster has also used one of my pictures
on his website. For the most part folks seem to like my wooden 604, so I have attached some
additional pics. Have a very Merry Christmas to all.
