I saw those, wow, $295. I paid $100 for my used ones in good condition last year, and I could have got a new set for $200 then. A few years ago, you could not have given those away. I should sell some of the ones I've been molding...

These are the ones I bought used:

I think I paid $225 from autoweapons.com a couple years ago for mine (good shape, no chips or cracks, but I still probably got taken for a bit)

They quoted me the same $295 for an NOS pair they had about 2 months back. Not in a rush to get a second set, so I passed on that too. This guy doesn't seem to be affiliated with them at all, but maybe he got his pricing from them or something?

Sherluck had several sets of DOE handguards in their case at Knob Creek, but I didn't geta cahnce to ask the price or if they were repros.

autoweapons.com has used DOE HGs for 100 bucks... a steal if you consider the fact that they are selling standard colt carbine HGs for $120

Um, didn't you just buy a do-it-all lathe??? I've seen several DOE handguards made by some hillbilly on a Chinese lathe that looked pretty good...made from black Delrin, IIRC...can't find the pics...maybe somebody remembers where they were???

Any-way...they were made manually on a cheap lathe...You should be able to clone a set pretty easily on that robotic lathe you bought...

Edit: Found the pics...

Nope my lathe is a Jet manual. It had/has trouble with the threading dial such that you can never dissengage the half nut during a threading op until your done. Otherwise you will lose your place and scrap the thread job. It's pretty freakin assanine but I just need to get comforable with not dissengaging the half nut. I have already done a few barrels with success so I think I am there. As for one peice DOE handgaurds, i am a stickler for details and I would prefer a good replica of the original two peice. Also I have no way to cut the vent's on top/bottom since I have no milling machine!

I've been thinking about picking up a Shopsmith, since my lathe was too small. But then I'd have to sell my Sherline mill, and convince the wife that I needed the combo machine. I sold the lathe on eBay already...

Tom if you do get to a point where you'd like to try making copies, I'd be more than happy to send you my pair as reference.

Turnerboy,

Thanks for the offer, I actually already have a set as a reference. I am hoping that someone will produce these that will work with me. I would love to make these a mass produced public offering.

Well to put it to a point, I want to mass produce the uppers, and I think I might have the backing to do so. The real sticker is the handgaurds. I am thinking of a batch of 100 plus uppers.

You might want to put a couple feelers out on CNCGuns Forum...Those guys are CNC'ing AR parts (mostly lower receivers) and do other odd lot jobs... ;)

I just got a one piece handguard from Garrison last week along with the barrel and front sight assembly. I will post pics later, it turned out real nice. Even though his site is down he is still doing business. He can be contacted at 419-392-2542

I think the handguards were around 60-65.00 and he did do the barrel for me but said he was very short on barrels. My barrel is not chrome-lined but you could always ask if he has any. I really didn't care one way or the other so I did not ask. Best bet is to just call him. Took me a few tries but finally got through to him.

I don't think the original 633 barrels were chrome lined. I used one of the new $125 Numrich 9mm sporter barrels on my replica, a friend on this board chopped it and turned it down for me, and did a wonderful job.

Here are some pictures of my build. The barrel, handguards, and front sight are from Garrison.

So with the one piece handguards you have to torque the barrel nut with Delta ring on. Then slide on the handguard. Add the handguard end cap. and then the front site assemble and then pin it?

Yap. It all went together pretty easy. The hardest part was keeping the front sight aligned while tapping the pin in. Everything fits together nice and snug with no play in the handguards or the front sight assembly.

That's interesting...they've changed the size/position of the front vent...and it's one piece now...

I am curious as to why...

My barrel was 200.00 and the front sight was 85.00.

I assume with the shorter DOE handguards he had to cut the .625" FSB journal farther back on the E-gunparts barrel?

I managed to scarf up a NOS 633 barrel on the EE.

It is chrome-lined.

That's right, and there was just enough lip behind the FSB to hold it in place, but it worked well.
