Has anyone done both a stock saddle and a cane end on a ar pistol? I know it has been said that both are legal apart but can you use both?

It depends on what you mean by cane tip. A thin protective tip on the end of the RE has been cleared for use to prevent damage from storing on the end in a safe or such. If your thinking about a cane end that would be found on the end of a crutch or such then there is nothing indicating this is legal.

Something like this is ok:

Something like this would most very likely not be a favorable outcome for you:

Your in a free state, why risk your gun owning rights for life to save $200?

Yea, just pay the $200 and SBR it! I would have one in my safe if Iowa allowed it!

That is pretty reasonable. I am not into the saddles, but whatever floats your boat.

NFA is quite the challenge. Sure, it is cheap. Compared to money we all throw into firearms, it is a drop in the bucket. The bigger issue is how impractical NFA really is . How are some of the reasons going with a pistol beats going with a SBR.

Have fun letting family use your gun. Unless the SBR is owned by a trust/LLC/corp, the SBR is stuck with a person and others are not to have access. (We all know shooting at a range doesn't count.)

Of course you can't take off and just travel with a SBR without planning. Pistols have no federal restrictions. So, if the neighboring states allow, you just go.

In addition, many states restrict concealed carry, to include in a vehicle, to a handgun and not long arms. Other states do not allow a rifle/shotgun loaded in the vehicle at all. Carrying a pistol in a vehicle is often less of a legal issue.

Really, the $200 is nothing. The limitations on SBRs are an issue.
