Finally finished my 7.62x39 build and....

I'm kind of disappointed....Specs:

Spike's Jolly Roger lower
Spike's ELPK (ergo traded out for MOE+)
PWS enhanced buffer tube
Fab Defense GL-SHOCK
Aero Precision upper (Gave my last Spike's upper to my brother thinking they would get them back in stock)
OPS 416 Fail Zero piston kit
ITS Superbolt 7.62x39
POF roller cam
Model 1 enhanced firing pin
Midwest Industries free float piston rail
YHM gas block/front sight
Samson quick flip rear sight
cheapo 7.62x39 barrel (place holder for 11.5" YHM chrome lined barrel pending approval of my tax stamp)
Troy 7.62 claymore muzzle device

I am used to mid length gas systems and having that much handguard or rail space to put my hands on so I think that is why it feels weird to me.
-Was thinking about changing the rail out for a Spike's 10" BAR rail (no telling when they will be back in stock) or MI rifle length with a low profile gas block underneath to solve this problem.

Not sure about the stock...because the recoil reduction is probably not needed and I would imagine it would make actually make keeping on target harder but need to shoot it first to find out.
-Already thinking of replacing it with an STR

The rifle just looks weird to me in FDE. I always like the way the color looks in pictures or on other people's rifles, but I'm not sure it does it for me in person...
-Buy black furniture

Please feel free to critique, bash or whatever so I can get some more input to help make decisions!

Thanks

Maybe it's the pictures, but it looks OK to me. I do hear ya about the midlength, though. How much real estate will you lose when you get your stamp?

I don't know much about the stock you have, but it should work for ya.

I like the look of the Magpul ACS stock myself. It should do everything you want out of the STR and then some. It doesn't matter though, it's all about personal preference. Magpul makes great stocks.

I do like black myself. Some get bored with all black and go with other colors. It's all preference.

Rail will be the same once I get the tax stamp, or I might go 10" or 12" depending on what's in stock....

I like it minus the stock, the STR would look good on it.

Thanks, and those are oleanders. Supposed to be blood red, but they seem much more pink this year....

Where in TX are you? I'm a fellow 7.62 AR owner and in N DFW. Good luck with the rifle on its maiden voyage. I took the build plunge despite all of the feed issues that I read about. My ARP upper has been flawless with Asc and AR Stoner mags. I just installed a RR NM 2 stage so hopefully I wont have any light strikes... I serously doubt I will

I'm in North Houston but work in Dallas at least once a month. This is actually my 2nd 7.62x39 build, I did the first one just for fun and loved it so much I decided to to it again but with better parts and sold the other upper. It truly is the best of both worlds in my opinion, its an AR that shoots larger chunks of lead for less money per round

wouldn't mind having that shock stock if the money's right. my first build was 7.62x39 and I also used the shock stock. I would say try it both ways before you sell the shock stock. it took me about 200rds to get the hang of the stock. I had the habit of really pulling the stock back into my shoulder. doing so I was pulling all the travel out of it and recoil was pretty bad for follow up shots. just put it on your shoulder and try not to pull back too much and the stock works nicely.
if its not for you send me an IM with a deal and I'll buy it.

Will do sir. I am going to shoot it this weekend and I'll get with you if I decide not to keep it.

You will find that that stock will really keep muzzle rise down and speed followup shots. It makes a big difference on 7.62x39 weapons (especially AKs).

However, I would remove the cheek riser unless you have some really high optic, which is hard to end up with on a flat top AR. The cheek riser is very useful for a carry handle-mounted optic, or on an AK or SA vz.58, or a shotgun with an optic, but is generally not needed with a flat top AR. I never run the cheekpiece on an AR, and I run my stock at the second position from fully collapsed, so I don't like the way the charging handle bumps up over the cheekpiece in that position. If you run your stock longer, this is not an issue.

On AKs and vz.58s I always run the cheek piece.

ETA: By the way, I think the rifle looks good.

I see what you mean about the charging handle, the only reason I bought this charging handle is because I thought it could be used with the rider, but mine won't work at all with it collapsed. I am surely going to shoot it with the stock first and then make my decision. Who knows, I may end up deciding all of my rifles need one...

Most charging handles will ride over it, but they bump up over it and I don't like that at all. It makes me think that sometime I will have to clear a malfunction and may short-stroke the bolt or something. I recommend that you take the cheek piece off before you try it if you run your stock short.

I bought a Troy 7.62 claymore muzzle brake for a 7.62 YHM upper but it doesn't fit, did you have any complications installing the muzzle brake on yours?

I believe YHM makes a non standard thread pitch...check to make sure you have the correct thread pitches on both the brake and muzzle...

Most 7.62 FH/Brakes are a 5/8"-24 TPI, the only other option was the one mentioned by another member is to buy a thread adapter.
