.308 prebuilt vs DIY fo Accuracy
Would a prebuilt .308 or DIY achieve sub-MOA cheaper?

I guess that depends on a lot of things? Components used, who is assembling it, etc.
On accurate .30 caliber ARs the OBR and MWS come to mind, as do the KAC offerings.
The .308 AR platform is a inherently accurate rifle. Even $900 entry level rifle shoot very well. I've shot all the main brands but KAC and LaRue. I bought a Noveske and I'm glad I did. The CMMG .308 AR looks like a lot of gun for the money. PRS, floated, coated for $1500.

If that is your only criteria, then I'd say prebuilt. Every 24" LR308 I've shot was an MOA gun, and you cant build one for less. Problem is finding one. I've heard the CMMG is a similar performer; if CDNN ever gets any I may try one for myself.

good point.
op, beware: successful diy's can cause a bad case of brd, which has few known remedies short of bankruptcy...

Or divorce

Here's a video that someone posted recently. I found it very interesting. It makes me want to have my barrel scoped just out of curiosity.
My point being, DIY or pre-built ... it's all about the most important details that make the biggest differences. If you have a shitty barrel then it would likely shoot less consistent regardless whether you or a factory assembled it.
Don't skimp on a barrel, get a good upper and that should get you on the right track.
This thread makes me very happy that I shelled out for a Noveske barrel. I
almost went with a barrel that was significantly less expensive.
Wow! That video makes me wonder about Remington!
And let me give you some more information. I was thinking something along the lines of a Kreiger bull barrel, DPMS recievers, and a free floated grip. Of course scoped as well. Would something like that work out well or should i just save more money and get a good prebuilt like and OBR or any of the other great ones?

20inch barrel at least too.

What is your budget and what are you going to use it for?

You can splurge with a big budget and still not come close to the price of an OBR. MEGA makes a great upper and lower. The quality is outstanding. If you use a good barrel and parts you should have a nice shooter.
Rainier Arms:
MEGA MA-TEN 308 Monolithic Upper/Lower Combo $982.00
Noveske 7.62mm Barrel - 21" $554.40
Armalite AR10 Bolt Carrier Group w/ Forward Assist $257.00
DPMS Panther Claw 308-TL-PRC$57.90
DPMS .308 Bolt Catch $9.50
Buffer Tube: Stag / CMT Receiver Extension for M16 Rifle $19.95
Armalite AR10 Buffer $18.00
AR10 Buffer Spring $8.00
3 X Magpul 20 Round PMAG - 7.62X51 (.308) $56.85
Shipping - $7.95
Rock River Arms.com:
Rock River Arms Lower Parts INDIVIDUALLY PURCHASED $21.56
Shipping - Yet to be determined
Joe Bob Outfitters:
RRA 2 Stage NM Trigger Group $90.20
Shipping - Free
Local gun shop with $100 gift card:
Magpul PRS Stock $165.85
Brownell’s:
DPMS .308 A2 FLASH HIDER 5/8X24 $19.95
YHM AR-STYLE .308 Crush Washer $3.99
Shipping $7.63
Grand Total Including Shipping = $2,280.73
The price could be dropped significantly if I used a Rainier Arms barrel, A2 stock, DPMS BCG and a few other less expensive parts.
The price could be dropped even more by going with a forged upper & lower receiver and a hand guard. It might have been a bit lighter too.

Essentially as cheap as possible (Im in college) but i dont want to skimp where it counts because then i will just end up having to upgrade it later on. I want to use it for punching tiny groups in paper and
occassional hunting trips.

Hmm... I wonder if you'd be better off then setting up a 6.8AR platform maybe?
I also now feel terrible having suggested,
"Yeah get an OBR, KAC EMC or LMT MWS

"
Either way as someone who has done the college kid budget thing? I highly, highly, recommend "buy once cry once", getting better kit later instead of cheaper stuff now.
I skimped here and there on some builds, and while I was happy to have a build done- when I shelled out and had them done right? It was much more enjoyable.
On a budget the DPMS LR-308B is on the cutoff of being light enough to hunt with, but is typically very accurate with FGMM ammo in my experience (played with 4 different uppers). I would recommend getting an optic for lightweight hunting and an optic for longer range target shooting that you can swap out.
FYI, it is going to be very difficult to find anything in-stock right now. However, if you call around you might be able to get on a shorter wait list.

I'm in a similar boat. CMMG is what I came up with. If i don't like the accuracy (although the rifle
will out-shoot me) I planned on changing out for a Rainier barrel.
The billet on the CMMG makes the gun look significantly cooler IMO, too.
Concerning barrel length, .308 travels significantly slower than .223. Translation being, shortening the barrel comes with less harsh consequences. IIRC its about 20 FPS per inch of barrel.
I plan on going suppressed one day, so i'll likely go 16 or 18"
Those are some awesome prices! But i heard that armalite makes some not so good barrels. Is that true?
And those CMMGs looks great! Pretty much the same thing that JD Machine Tech does with their .308s.
