The BCG should do fine in an A1 upper. Don't think there's any issues there. What about a 20" barrel? Doubt you'd find one chrome lined but perhaps you could get it melonited/nitro-carburized (?).

very doable. M1Sales has 20" CL barrels; HBAR though. You can get a melonited one from Ballistic Advantage in A1 contour but there will be a wait. I initially ordered mine that way from them, switched to 16" medium weight.

Guess you could always get ADCO to turn it down to A1 profile.

So, the bottom line is yes and it is being done more than you think.
5.45x39 is a very inexpensive centerfire option right now, and many competition shooters are putting it to good use for both volume shooting as well as precision and accuracy shooting at short ranges.

I have had good luck with the 20" bbl from M1S in a short range service rifle set up and would recommend it.

Wonder how the heavier 70gr Wolf stuff would do for *longer* ranges?

Don't have much time while on the road. I did get hold of some of the Hornady ammo and will try to see if it is better than Mil-Surp.
If I can get some time off, I will report back with results.

From my experience shooting the 70gr wolf out to 450 yards (along with surplus and silver bear in the same outting). I found that the 70gr wolf was better in the wind than the surplus or silver bear and it resulted in more hits on target(steel) as the wind shifted.

I don't think the wolf is more accurate, other days i've found that the surplus grouped better for me than the wolf. But I feel at longer ranges the wind definitely effects the surplus more than the wolf.
