DPMS Style Fanken-Mess .308! Help me build it.
Ok so I'm working on a rifle. Have a few parts piled up, but need some help/opinions on a few things.
Here's what I have right now:
DPMS Lightweight Upper w/forward assist, dust cover, etc.
Chrome DPMS Bolt Carrier Group
Bushmaster ORC chrome lined middy barrel w/factory gas block with bayonet lug, sling loop, etc.
Magpul FDE UBR, MOE Grip, etc.
Just need a lower parts kit and some sort of handguard. That's what I need help/opinions on.
Do I get a factory DPMS 308 Barrel nut ($28.90), Delta Pak ($16.95), and a MOE handguard ($35), all totaling $81 w/o shipping. Do I go with a midlength free float tube (can you recommend one?), like a JP/Vtac, Apex, or? Or do I chop the bayonet lug and sling loop off and get a 12" rail, such as a DD lite (break the bank!!), Vtac, Apex, Troy, etc...There are a lot more options for 12" or Carbine than the middy.
What are you guys opinion on this? I like the long rail look, but kinda keeping this as a kick ass, KISSish, carbine.
It sounds good just the Magul MOE handguard.
If you are going with free float handguard. Rainier Arms has this X11 (11") that is quite afforable and looks great.
I highly recommend a low profile gas block for one piece free float handguard, so that you can remove the hanguard without remove the gas block.
I just picked up a Troy TRX 308 free float myself. If you go that route, it comes with its own barrel nut, AND its one of the lightest, thinnest freefloat available. Just make sure you get the right one. I'm using a Fulton side charging upper, so I had to get the DPMS High Profile compatable one. DPMS switched to a Low Profile top rail [difference is a fraction of an inch] so you have high and low profile top rails out there, hence the reason Troy makes a HP and LP TRX. Armalite uses a different thread pattern for the nut so they have a completely different TRX 308 available.
I like my Apex handguard. The gator texturing is great and the overall size/diameter is great.
I like Samson freefloat handguards. Your leftt hand don't have to experience the roughness texture.
For lower parts kit I went with a Spikes Tactical LPK without the trigger
in both of my builds. For a triggers I am using the Spikes Battle Trigger
in one and plan on using a Geissele in my next build. The Spikes battle trigger is really smooth.
Thanks for the help guys. I'm really liking the troy, but not sure I want to have it over the gas block and 12" long!
BTW have you guys ever had trouble getting a barrel into an upper? I've built upwards of 10 AR-15's or so (no .308), and never seen a barrel extension not go into the upper!!
I have swapped three barrels in my LR 308 and had no problem fitting a barrel extension into the upper.
I build one LR308, my barrel extension goes into the receiver just fine after torque down the barrel nut.
It is not a slip fit for sure.
