Ordered everything for my next build, Wilson Combat .204 Ruger PICS UPDATED FINISHED PICS
I was given 3 ammo boxes full of 204 ruger, I like the round, but dont own any rifles in the caliber so I was thinking about getting another 700, until I did a little research and it seems people like the ar15 204 so I figured I will try it...
Ordered a wilson combat fluted stainless 18" mid length 204 barrel, also got the low pro gas block from them.
Ordered the gas tube, YHM diamond middy rail, and upper receiver from SAA
Ordered the Upper parts kit from bownells {no one else has them, had to order everything separately}
And from Midway I got the Daniel Defence BCG, BCM charging handle, and an A2 stock
I while back I bought 2 S&W MP15 lowers, that I had plenty of parts to complete them with- I used a rra 2stage match trigger, kns antiwalk pins, oversized safety selector, Oversized td pins, troy trig guard, and an oversized mag release.. I need to buy a grip for it since all I have it the milspec plastics, which will work until I make up my mind... I assembled some of the lower tonight, so now just a waiting game for the parts to get here... After my discounts the upper is going to cost me about $670 shipped....
Tits
What all is different from a .223 AR-15?
Just the barrel... I think they make 204 mags, but everyone I talked to says the 556 mags work perfectly... Same Bolt so easy build... BUT the 204 ruger is a 4000 FPS + round... I have a model 700 in 22-250 which is also a fast round, and very impressive, hopefully the 204 is just as nice... I believe itsone of the fastest factory ammos, something like 4200fps..
I've been thinking about doing the same. It's just a necked down 223 case, right?

Nope.
Based on .222 Magnum.
Fits the 5.56 AR magazine.

5.56 mags work fine. I have a 204 I put together with the 24" DPMS barrel. my best accuracy came with lighter bullets 32 gr. and RE10 powder
I could'nt reach 4200 fps. with my loads

4085 was the best before primers showed pressure signs with 32 gr. pills.
I'd suspect a bit more velocity loss in the shorter wilson combat barrel also. not a big deal to me.
I'm pretty sure I'll be ordering the same barrel also for another 204 upper build. Post a review of it's accuracy if ya think about it

Im not too worried about getting the most fps out of it, Im going to use it for varmints {only go out about 200 yards}... The gentleman that gave me the ammo said he got around 3800fps and I want to say his barrel was 22" or so... I will post pics when the parts come and a range report when shes together...
What are you using for a scope on there...

that's a older millet 4-16x56. 30mm tube. I think you'll like the 204.
That Wilson Combat barrel looks nice, it should make for a far better field rifle than a 24 bull.
I hope she's a shooter for ya!
You won't get anywhere near 4000 fps with an 18" barrel in a 204. I have built and tested a bunch of them and most are hard pressed to hit 4000 with a 24" tube in a gas gun with 32 gr bullets. They are also subject to feeding issues due to the longer case body length. I find Lancer L5 20 rounders to be the most reliable. You can modify the feed lips on Pmags for 100% reliability.

hmm. never any feed issues with mine with GI 20's? then again I only load 5 in the mag.
I do agree on fps. my load with 32 vmax is at 3940 average. 4085 = flat primers, loose primer pockets when decapping.
it's still a great round for suburban areas where most folk's can't seem to read NO TRESSPASS signs! my day's of using a 25-06 in this area are long past
congrats on the build, I wanted to get a .204, just have a hard time replacing my .17 Remington bolt gun for varmints, it shoots .25 MOA, but will probably build up a .204 one of these days
Here are the first pics of her, not done but with whats come so far its as far as I can go... Got the lower built..
SW lower, rra trigger, hogue grips, kns antiwalks, oversized safety, oversized mag release and pull pins, troy trig guard, and Tact link, Also got the DD bcg, bcm handle, and scope in Leupold mark AR 4-12x40mm, and the mount is a burris pepr {sorry not in the pic}... Looks like everything will be here by the end of the week, I will update after then...

Barrel came yesterday looks really good, just waiting on the upper receiver and handguard now...
well. I went ahead and ordered up the wilson combat 204 barrel also, along with other odds and ends.
I need somthing a bit lighter than that DPMS 24".build

I went ahead and ordered a couple scopes also this week so that kinda cost abit. Ordered the new P-223 3-9x40 and another 6-24x44 Weaver 40/44 series.
double post.

I built one with a 24" WOA barrel. Bought 40gr bullets before testing factory ammo. I got a good load with the 40gr but with a box of 32gr factory ammo it shot a lot better. I now have 32gr bullets to find a load for. It is a fun gun. I have a Magpul PRS on it it weighs a lot but the truth is I will not be hiking anywhere but from the Jeep to the Table with it. I will take it out this summer for P Dogs.
MAHA
Can anyone comment on the barrel life for the .204?
OK, I have been busy so the parts sat there untouched for a few days but I finally got her finished up...
I took it to the range and ran some cheap 32g rounds through it and it shot amazing, no hiccups, very little recoil, and seems to group the 32's around .65 avg, my best group had 3 pretty much touching {with nosler trophy ammo} but only had 8 rounds of that stuff, one of the guys at the range gave me, he said its almost $2.50 a round so I wont be buying that stuff, but it shoots well...
I ran a total of 48 rounds through it and Im very happy with it, I want to say this is the most accurate ar I own, but Im not positive because my 556 bull brled gun shoots well too... I ran 100 rounds through that on the same range visit...
I was also impressed how fast I got this one zeroed in, I put a burris dot on the top of the burris pepr mount and the scope is a 40mm leupold mark ar, they both hit the marks after 3 shots, but I was adjusting them at the same time, I had her strapped in to the rest... I also through a streamlight on there for good measure...
Total spent with optics, light, and bipod {not in pic} is $1980 even... I dont think thats too bad considering half of that was from the light, bipod, and optics....
Heres the pics...

that build came out nice

you are correct these Wilson Combat barrels are very nice quality.
my 204 barrel, gas block and mid tube arrived today. I'll get the upper together after work tomorrow. I hope she's a shooter. I already have various 30,32's loaded.
I guess the Weaver I'd orded was backordered, The Nikon P-223 arrived yesterday with no Weaver with it

Glad you guys like the barrels!

This is one I built a couple of years ago in .204. I REALLY like it. Amazingly accurate and very little recoil. Of course it weighs 12 lbs.
Here's the specs:
Bushmaster Lower
DPMS Hi-Pro upper receiver
DPMS .204 fluted SS barrel, 24"
Magpul PRS stock
Armalite FG handguard
Young NM Carrier with Smith bolt
JP Fire Control Group, Single Stage @ 2.7 lbs
Burris 4.5 x 14 Scope

yes my DPMS rig shoots very well with light pill's. especially the little 30gr. Bergers

the weight kills me walkin 2-4+ miles, maybe 5-6- 30-60 acre plots, back and forth. Worse if it's muddy and I leave the truck on the hard road at some farms.

I can walk/ sneek most shots down to 2-300 yards unless I get lazy. Good exersise for an old fudd though, head phones listing to the cleveland Indians, smokin Chuck's!...............
that's a real nice rifle ya have
this W.C. barreled upper can't even be compared to the big 24"

hell my wife sends $$$$$$$$$$ to all those groups

I shoot the shit out of fur!
I think our 2nd. date I crossed the centerline to get a possum with with the truck

She made me take her home, I did

She called in less than 2 weeks

been together ever since 87
She makes her own $ I make mine ( about 3 times as much!)

spend it as ya see fit! My Wife eats meat so no Deer go to waste here.
yours will loosen up with time. Women are like a new ball glove, takes awhile to break one in, once it fit's it's hard to play with another!
by the way. I break for all critters nowadays

soft with old age! I sure hope God smokes Chuck's or I'm in trouble when that day roll's around!
dang double!

bad disconnector in the mouse!
any you guys have a 20practical you can compare the 204 to?
Ive been thinking of adding a 20cal to the vermin line up.
A quarterbore can play too
I dont see an advantage to the 20 practical over the 204, maybe because there is a lot more 223 brass around, it makes sense to reload it, but the 204 being a factory load makes more sense to me, Ive looked over the #'s and their ballistics are very similar... Ive shot both and I dont see a huge difference, I guess personal preference would weigh out on them to, I prefer to be able to buy ammo in a box over not...
Yeah off the shelf doesn't matter to me LOL, but all considering they are pretty damn close it seems.
seems the 20P will be in my future then.
