I have a DPMS LR-308 with A3 Flat Top.. 16" Heavy BBL..

as MBUS Rear and MI Front-Flip Sights..

I ordered up a Burris PEPR Quick Detach mount for a scope.. should be here Tuesday..

I have currently a Bushnell Trophy XLT 4-12x40 w/AO.. that has the 600 DOA (BDC built-in)..

(I have ran the Bushnell on my Saiga 308 with great success out to my 200 yards range max..)

I also have a Nikon ProStaff Nikoplex Recticle 3-9x40 w/o AO coming in also.. on Wed.. was on sale for $100 from $159..

I know the rifle can go OUT to 600+ yards.. but

which scope would you mount?? (between these 2 choices ONLY)???

I'd like to TAG 600+ yards OR MORE.. (I have property in TX and have LOTS of room)..

People with Nikons are encouraged to respond.. or people with 3-9x40 scopes.. how FAR can YOU SEE & HIT..

You will be better off with the higher power scope.

Not trying to be mr. negative here, but even that 12x won't do a whole lot out at 600 yds +. Those crosshairs cover even large targets that far out at 12x and then you're just giving it your best guess where you're actually aiming on the target.

Thanks.. a few other boards I asked on said to run the Bushnell DOA 4-12x40 with AO.. on the DPMS

and mount the Nikon 3-9x40 to the S308..

I looked out my back door with the 4-12 yesterday while set @ 9x and I could see the garbage cans about 400 yards easily with the 7" center HOLE for recylcing cans/bottles just fine with the + hairs.. the + hairs did NOT obstuct the view of the 7" hole..

I also know @ 400 - 600 yards the SHOT is all on me and not the rifle..

I've never shot 600+ but at 450, with 3-9 it's not to bad to make torso hits. The worst part for me was adjusting the elevation and windage from my 100 yard zero.

I've seen videos of people on youtube hitting 600 iron sights with a bunch of different guns. Not something I could do but i'm sure for someone like that 3-9 would be plenty out to 600.

Hey guys, what's going on? Just getting ready to shoot 500m here...

I think any optic you pick will be fine...

i have the Nikon Monarch 4-16SF with the BDC retical on a .260 rem. you can still shoot close up just fine, i got a buck that was on the run last year at 100yds.
taken deer out to 500 with it, and practice to 700. the BDC is nice becuause you can center the target in the holdovers so the crosshairs wont cover the target.
some deer in the back yard at about 200 at dusk at 16x

i would go with the Nikon, the Trophy's are pretty bottom of the line for Bushnell.

I agree 100%. I shot NRA High Power for a few years and iron sights are way more effective than most realize.
The 600 yard course of fire is a real eye opener.

As to the question, I'd go 12x over 9x.
I also agree (big agreement day) with the poster above, the Nikon Monarch 4-16SF with the BDC is excellent.

Well after weighing the options.. the 4-12x40 with AO now rides on top of my DPMS 308.. in the Burris QD PEPR..

Also combined with the DOA 600 BDC (which I've already tested with my current 308 selection) I feel GTG..

Test it out on Sunday possibly.

Thanks for all the input..

It JUST fits over the MBUS on the rear (scope cap rides 1/4 hair over)..

Hi.

Per the MI instructions.. I am running a LOW PRO block, and the Vented FF Tube is taller.. so the FLIP won't FLIP the other direction.

I covered this before in my 1st post back in Dec when I did the initial pics.. but the MI directions DOES say to run it this way if you have to.. I could NOTCH the FLIP to go over the front of the FF tube but.. no.

Running the Bushnell Trophy XLT 4-12x40 with DOA (BDC).. while the Monarch may be better the PRICE is not condusive..

4-12 should get me to 400-500 which will end up being my MAX distance more than likely anyway.
