That would be cool. Sorry if this topic is stupid or a dupe or easy to figure out on your own.

No. It's too long to fit in either the AR15 or AR10 mag well. Cobb was making working on an AR that would've worked, but they got bought out and no one's heard anything from them since.

Cobb did come out with a 30-06 AR, as a 100th anniversary gun, only 100 were made, they are about as easy to find as El Dorado.

Cob was bought out by Bushmaster, Cerebus etc. in 2007. Bushmaster did promise to continue some of the Cobb line, as far as I know, that's yet to happen.

Oh Snap!

Actually I don't think much people would need a thirthy'ought-six AR. A hot loaded .308 can get pretty close in performance AFAIK,
and if you REALLY want to go full ahead, there's always .458...

ar's are a short action bullet, .308's are medium and .30-06 is long. cna you imagine how long a magazine you would have to have to .30-06? much less an upper and bolt for that length? stock length and OAL of rifle would be HUGE.

As mentioned above, the M1918 BAR. The 80% receiver made from 8620 weighs something like 10 lbs... Overall the rifle is 16 lbs for the lightest version, up to 20 lbs for the A2 variant. Joke was it took 2 men to hump it in the field and a young boy to carry the ammo.... Old marine I worked with was blessed to carry it as a reward for mouthing off to the DI...

Are you talking about .458 SOCOM or .458 Win Mag? I wouldn't consider .458 SOCOM to be a step up from .308 or -06. It has a much shorter range and isn't very practical for most people (especially since most of us already have 12 gauge slugs when we need a really slow heavy bullet).

But back on original topic....I don't see why anyone would want a customized AR10 that fits .30-06, when you can get a much more common rifle in .308 that takes standard parts and mags. Put some Hornady Superformance in there and you essentially have a .30-06, but in a more standardized platform where you will always be able to get parts and reasonably priced mags.

Heck if you had a .30-06 length gun you could shoot .458 WinMag......

The reason i asked is because it would make sense to have rifles chambered in common military cals. What other common ammo can be purchased by the case that can be chambered in an ar? Besides 7.62s and ak74 stuff?

30.06 hasn't been a common military caliber in decades.

I think he is referring to the fact that .30-06 can be purchased in quantity from the CMP.

Between WW1 and WW2 BILLIONS of rounds had been made, and that's just in this country.. .30-06 surplus ammo will be common well after our grand kids are dead and gone.

Anybody messed with the .300OSSM yet?

Seems like it might fill the bill.

Not to mention that the .30-06 is a well researched and proven round, capable of a broad range of bullet weights, powder charges, and applications.
I would love a bolt upper on an AR15 lower [either single shot or side load from box mag], just because it would allow me to put my grandfathers '03A3 back in the wood and hang it on the mantel instead of using it for my .30-06 rifle.

Some group named "Only Long Range" is making one named "Bad News" in .338 Lapua Mag.
