 DPMS LR-308 20" accuracy...

I've got a LR-308C with some factory mods (pertinent ones are single rail gas block & floating hand guard). I have only shot 2 types of ammo so far through it; Fiocchi 150 gr FMJ & Fusion 150 gr.

The Fiocchi is, in a word, horrendous. 4 inch, 5 shot groups at 100 yds is the BEST that it will do. Fusion is a little better at about 2 inch's.

While I am no match shooter; I regularly shoot just under 1 inch out of my Ruger M77 in 6mm Remington with handloads, so I don't believe it's (much) operator error. I do have .308 dies on order so I can start to load up some rounds to try soon.

Does anyone have recommendations for FMJ factory loads that work well in their similar DPMS and, for you hand loaders, any favorite recipes?

On a side note, the 150 gr. Fusion only groups a little better out of my sons Savage 16FLHSS; and this rifle shot 4 sub 1 inch groups with Federal Gold Medal Match 168 gr. (I requisitioned one box last year from a LE friend). When funds are available I am certainly going to try these!

I'd look at Federal GMM 168GR or Prvi 168GR (both match loads) if you can find them. Pricey but should get you much better results.

I use 43 grains of Varget in Winchester cases set off with CCI 200s to drive 168 grain A-Maxes loaded to an overall length of 2.80".

This gets me 5 shot groups of right at 3/4" with my 308C (both before and after the barrel was reprofiled by ADCO). The average velocity is 2490 fps over my CED chrono.

As always, start a few grains lower and work up to this.

The only factory ammo I've tried was PVRI Partizan 168 grain match. It wouldn't cycle the action and provided an average velocity of 2440 fps......and shot into 2 - 2 1/2 inches.

If anyone wants the 60 remaining cartridges I've got, let me know.

I'll take em. Sending email now.

I don't have the same model of LR-308 (mine is an SASS) but it will shoot 2" groups with 168gr Gold Medal Match at 300 yards regularly.

I've got the same rifle and have had good results with benchmark and 168gr amax. Have only shot with the open sights, but I was able to get about 1 1/4" groups at a hundred yards (much better than I was expecting considering my eyesight!) I loaded to just under magazine length. Haven't tried any other combinations yet, but I like benchmark in my ar's because its pretty clean burning compared to some of the other powders I've tried.

A friend has one and routinely shoots sub 1" groups with Federal 168GMM. I am sure the Leupold Mk4 8-25 helps, although the trigger is horrendous.

I've heard that about the DPMS triggers. Both of mine have JP Adjustable triggers and I really like them. I would recommend that upgrade when ordering an LR-308.

Yes, do not waste your money on the DPMS stock trigger, it is horrendous.

Another vote for Federal Gold Medal Match 168 grain, boat tail, hollow point.

For LR-308 shooters, this is the standard. It's a 1 in 10 twist and the lighter rounds are not ideal. If you chose to handload, I can almost guarantee that you will end up with some form of 168, FGGM clone.

Edit: also look into the Magpul mags. They are worlds better than the DPMS mags with regard to proper feeding and accuracy. Many reasons for this.

I have a LR-308 that began life with a 24" barrel. I had my gunsmith cut the barrel down to 20" and thread the barrel and install a Miculek compensator. I followed DPMS break in procedures to the T. I broke the barrel in using Hornady red box TAP loads with 155 grain A MAX loads. Accuracy was mediocre at 1.5". Then I switched to my hand loads trying to find out what it liked. All were shot using new Lapua brass, 168 grain Berger VLDs, and 4 different powders, all starting at book minimum and worked up to book maximum.COAL was set at 2.807" (magazine limited) CCI 250 primers were used. I only got to shoot the 2 lowest loads in each powder before running out of time.

All shooting was done using a bipod on front and an Accushot monopod on the rear, no sandbags were used at all. This is also using a Bill Springfield modified trigger group that I had to adjust my shooting style to keep from having doubles. Here are the results:

42 gr IMR 4064 - Avg Velocity - 2566 - Std Dev - 13.04 - Av group 1.408". Throw out the one flyer and avg group is 1.001"

43 gr IMR 4064 - Avg Velocity - 2672 - Std Dev - 40.83 - Avg group 1.203 - Throw out the one flyer and avg group is 1.107"

42 gr Varget - Avg Velocity - 2538 - Std Dev - 19.81 - Avg group 1.781 - Throw out the one flyer and avg group is .213"

43 gr Varget - Avg Velocity - 2596 - Std Dev - 9.00 - Avg group 1.216 - Throw out the one flyer and avg group is .789"

38 gr Benchmark - Avg Vel - 2517 - Std Dev - 26.00 - Avg group 2.491 - Even throwing out 2 flyers avg group was .863"

39 gr Benchmark - Avg Vel - 2587 - Std Dev - 19.00 - Avg group - 2.285 - These were all over the target

44 gr BL-(C)2 - Avg Velocity - 2576 - Std Dev - 15.00 - Avg group - 2.761 - Best group of 3 - .832"

45 gr BL-(C)2 - Avg Velocity - 2641 - Std Dev - 43.00 - Avg group - 4.596 - All over the place, no consistency

So far my gun seems to like Varget the best. I have to wait for another good day to finish the rest of the test loads. As usual you will most likely see the best results with hand loads.

I've had good luck with PPU 308 Match in 168gr.
Around a 1.5 in" group at 100 yards. Of course my DPMS is the LR-308T 16" flavor but the twist rate is the same but you might get higher velocities with a 20"

My LR308 24" likes the SMK bullets (168, 175, 180) with H4895, VV540, and IMR4064. Use either 210M or 215M Federal primers. My hunting load is 165 Hornady SST and 4064. All of these shoot around 1 1/4", 3 shots, at 200 yards off a bench. Trigger is McCormick. The 20" should shoot these as well.
