Hey all,

Need some help on replacing the standard A2 stock on a LR-308B stock with a 6-position stock. Does the stock have to be particular to .308? Just the tube? Buffer and spring? Curious if I have to buy an assembly for the .308 or if I can get a standard .223 type replacement and all will fit? Any advice would help.

THX.

Just have to trade out the spring and buffer, everything else is the same.

Absolutely. You need an appropriate CAR length buffer tube for whatever stock you are using, milspec or commercial, that depends on the stock. If you are going to be using a stock than needs a milspec tube like the HK E1 or the milspec EMOD then you need a milspec tube. If you are going with the standard EMOD or standard DPMS 6 position then you need a commercial CAR buffer tube. You will also need specific DPMS CAR buffer and buffer spring. and they are only available from DPMS or DPMS dealer.
They are part numbers:
Buffer, CAR buffer is #308-CS-10B $32.05
Buffer spring, CAR is #308-CS-10A $5.39.
Prices NOT current.

Someone needs to post a list of parts that interchange with the AR15/M16 and other platforms.

The lower parts are almost all the same as the AR-15. Only the front pivot pin, rear take down pin, and bolt catch SCREW are different from the AR-15.
Similarities with the AR-10 include:
using the same charging handle as the AR-10 and the bolt carrier and bolt from the AR-10 can be used in the LR-308.
It does have a different barrel nut and barrel extension which are specific to the LR-308.
The only parts not used from a standard AR-15 are:

Bolt Catch Screw #308-LR-11
Front Pivot Pin #308-LR-18
Rear Take Down Pin #308-LR-30
Buffer, CAR buffer is #308-CS-10B
Buffer spring, CAR is #308-CS-10A
DPMS #308-BS-11 LR-308 Rifle length buffer
DPMS #308-BS-10B LR-308 Rifle length buffer spring
LR-308 Barrel Extension #308-BL-17
LR-308 Bolt and Carrier assembly #308-BCA

I replaced the standard stock on my LR308 with a Magpul prs.

Didn't change the tube or the spring and it works just fine.

Did I do something wrong?

No, using a rifle length stock which used the standard A2 buffer tube is easy. PRS and ACE skeleton are good for that. Going from rifle length to carbine length (or vice versa), it gets more complicated.

Check the ar10 faq tack in the ar10 forum.

If you go to the ar10 forum with a question about an LR308 the Armalite weiners will post so many replies about "that isn't an ar10, you should go to the ar variants forum" that you will never get an answer.

That is why I posted to check the tack and why I didn't post to ask the question in the ar10 forum. A few can be abrupt but most are very helpful.

Does the stock have to be particular to .308? NO but you may not be able to retract the stock all the way with certain combinations.

Just the tube? NO but you may not be able to retract the stock all the way with certain combinations. You will need different buffers depending on whether the tube is ar15 or ar10 depth.

Buffer and spring? Sort of and yes Sort of because an ar15 buffer of the appropriate weight will work in an ar10 carbine buffer tube.

Curious if I have to buy an assembly for the .308 This would be the least complicated or if I can get a standard .223 type replacement and all will fit? Yes it will fit as long as you have the proper buffer and spring.

I hope this helps.

You should go to DPMS and buy their AP4 LR308 6 position stock that comes standard on the AP4 LR308. The buffer is differant but the spring is a standard buffer spring, I went with "Superior Shooting Systems" flat wound CS buffer springs in all my ARs and variants, last buffer spring you'll ever need.

Thanks all, turns out the DPMS stock I wanted comes with the standard CAR tube/buffer/spring, etc. so I am all set. Thanks for the help...

If you go that route make sure is is either 223 or 308. stock and tube are same. buffer & spring is caliber specific. dpms sells them both ways. doug
