DPMS 308 LR 24 SS 0.30 MOA at 100 yards

This rifle is a pleasure to shoot. I had just broken in the rifle and got this really nice 3 round group. I've repeated it once since then.

Largest outer diameter of the hole is 5/8 inch = 0.625. Bullet diameter is 0.308

Group size is: 0.625 - 0.308 = 0.317. MOA = 1.047 inches at 100 yards.

Group MOA is: 0.317 / 1.047 = 0.30 MOA

Ammo used: Georgia Ammo, 168gr match king.

Scope: Super Sniper 20x.

Trigger: Jewell 2 stage. I'm looking to replace this with a RRA 2 stage match trigger for better primer strikes. Jewell is too light for heavy 308 primers (HSM, mil-surplus).

DPMS rocks!

Damn! Nice shhoting. Is the rifle reliable?
charliez  [Team Member]
3/12/2006 11:33:32 AM
I've only had about 150 rounds through it (including break in shooting). It's been 100% reliable using match, mil-surplus, and factory ammo.

Just don't use Jewell triggers, they're too light to ignite heavy primers (mil-surplus, HSM, Wolf, Silver Bear). I'm looking to replace with RRA match trigger in the future.

I wish DPMS made these with the standard A3 upper (includes forward assist & ejection port dust cover).

Well, yes, but I was told that makes them a custom gun and takes 12 weeks to arrive ... (or at least that's what DPMS told me, so I placed a standard config from rguns.net).

Where did you order your rifle with the option from?

Thanks, Charlie.

OK, so you knew they offered that option and you chose not to get it? Why than make the statement: " I wish DPMS made these with the standard A3 upper (includes forward assist & ejection port dust cover)." if you knew they actually did? You do know that patience is a virtue...But I'm sure that it wouldn't have taken 12 weeks since they use the AP4 upper instead of their standard "empty" upper. You still have a nice rifle though.

I ordered mine from webarms

Hehe, yeah, I'm not making any sense am I Yep, I knew, I guess what I was wishing for was the standard to be with dust cover and forward assist, and for that to be in stock ...

got mine from webarms a couple years ago also. your missing out on the capabilities of the rifle. zero at 200 and shoot nothing less. i usually have a few shots touching at 200 and 300 yds, but i always throw the 4th round. 175 and 180gr bullets buck wind better. good shootin.

Yes, I was at a 200 yard range this weekend to zero it in. It was amazing to shoot that distance and hit targets with small groups.

For some reason I can't get tighter grouping than 0.3 MOA at 100 yards. I can get tighter than that at 200 yards but I can't measure it ... (going to sound like fish tale though as I forgot the 200 yard target at the range ... dooooh!)

I haven't had that kind of success shooting groups with mine. The best I've seen is right at 1". However, I have the stock trigger, and think that an upgrade would definitely help the group size. I'll have the leupy cranked to 25x and be watching my heartbeat through the scope, and wondering when is this sucker going to go off. Very hard to shoot consistently with an inconsistent trigger. Anyway, I spent the better part of Saturday with a 10"X14"gong at 500 yds. The gong paid dearly. Looking to upgrade the trigger to take the suspense out of the trigger pull.

The trigger definitely makes the difference. The stock service trigger makes me creep, twitch, or otherwise anticipate the shot (doesn't break cleanly).

The Jewell trigger I have is really nice. The 1st stage is smooth, and 2nd stage breaks crisply like a glass rod.

I had a chance to shoot my buddy's rifle (identical except the trigger and scope power). The trigger makes a difference for me.

He had an RRA 2 stage match trigger installed. With the same scope at 16X (I have 20X), I found that I couldn't shoot as nice a group as with my trigger. The RRA felt rougher than my Jewell trigger.

So, I'll be staying with my Jewell trigger. I figure why shoot mil-surplus/wolf ammo in a nice rifle. I can use my mil-surplus/wolf ammo in my 308 plinker/battle rifle.

I bought a new DPMS LR 308 18" from a guy on gunbroker.com and it landed last week. It has the gas block with the rail on it so I can add back-up sights to it. I'm doing the barrel break in as outlined in the paper work with the gun. I also shot a 3/8" 3 shot group at 100 yds. I'm very impressed with the accuracy and the barrel isn't even broken in yet. The trigger is a little crappy but with practice I should be able to cope with it for now. Maybe I'll look for a better trigger later. I was going to post pictures but didn't know how. Do I need to be a member for that?

That is an awesome rifle. I've been tempted to get the PRS stock myself.

Thanks for posting a picture of how it would look like! Now I'm double tempted

I have the same rifle see pics to be added later..

You will be very pleased with the rifle, the groups get better as you shoot more and get used to the power
and precision.

Whats best is that I can shoot surplus ammo all day with great accuracy see pics below.

As for the guy who asked is it reliable...WITH OUT A DOUBT !

Here are a couple of groups I shot recently at 100 yds with my DPMS .308 18" barrel. I'm using a Burris 3-9 scope, bipod and match 168 hpbt ammo. Still breaking in the barrel and getting used to the trigger

I think I'd like to grab your Bengal or Ocicat and take him home with me.

Love those little mini-leopards. Cool cats.

Yeah, My Bengals are photo felines. They have to be in every picture that is taken. I have two of them and the other pictures I have show his sister as well. Thanks for the good words guys. I took her out today to break her in and once I got on the damn paper it was a very awesome shooter. I was only using cheap ammo as well. I have about 40 more rounds for the first 100 rd break in and than I will try some of the good stuff and see how she shoots. Thanks again.

You will love that DPMS, it will become your favorite rifle.

I know mine is, specially after these scumbags have gone up on .223 and 762x39.

Oh but the surplus .308 is still at a fair price..so guess what rifle I will be shooting more of...

I will take my new (just broken in) AP4 to the range Sunday and see what it will do with Aussie surplus, Federal Match, and my reloads (168-gr SMK, 45-gr Varget, 210M primers, and Blk Hills once-shot cases). I may only have the iron sights , though.

This is one of the latest targets from my 24" Panther .308 at 100 yards shooting from the Harris bipod. Oddly, it will shoot tighter (smaller MOA) at 200 yards. I will try 200 and 300 yards again in about two three weeks and will post those targets.

What kind of range are you guys getting with the 18" barrels before the bullet goes subsonic? I'm looking at building a DPMS rifle with a 18-20" barrel and suppressing it so I don't want it to long and unwieldly, but also don't want to give up to much velocity (and long range performance).

will the AR15 rail systems work with this rifle?

excellent choice...

What did you pay for it ?

Did you get any features with it, two-stage scope ect ??

Good quality ammo, shoot 5 rnds then clean it, and repeat for about 20 rnds. DPMS may have some suggestions on their site or phone them. Excellent customer support.

Keep checking EE here I have got them for 30 a piece, DPMS wants 60 per.
I have not seen many at gun shows.

You will love that rifle, I love mine !

Yes standard triggers will work, I used RRA two-stage in mine.

There is one trigger that DPMS say will not work or dont use in their lower I think its a JARD ?
Check the website.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

How do you rate the RRA 2 stage trigger? I ordered one from Brownells today. Dealer cost was $75 (That C&R FFL has really paid off)

I really like them so much I have them in all of my AR type lowers even the .308 DPMS as I mentioned.

No problems and very smooth which keeps groups tight when you do not have that play and rough action.

Good deal for 75 new.

Finally made it out to the range today, work and weather have both been an issue.

Hoped to shoot my DPMS LR .308 from 100 to 300 yards. Unfortunately the range was a mud pit beyond 100 yards, Hip Wadders would have been required. That being the case I stuck to shooting at 100 yards.

I have had my DPMS LR .308 for about a year and it seems to just keep getting better (maybe it is just me getting better).

The groups below were shot using a rest on the front and a bag on the rear, and I was using the Nikon Scope set at 12 Power. I was shooting Federal Gold Medal 168 grain.

I am not sure of the exact measurements because the "Shoot & Sees" are kind of hard to get a good measurement on, but I will let the pictures speak for themselves. I shot 120 rounds, and with the exception of a couple of flyers (called due to strong wind gusts) everything was well below 1.0 MOA.

I have no doubt that the limiting factor with this rifle is the shooter (me), not the rifle. I have shot my .308 Remington 700 religiously for almost 20 years, and I would have never thought the day would come that I would leave it in the case and shoot an "Autoloader" in its place, but that day just might be here!

Considering that I also paid under $1000 for the base rifle, I keep wondering if I am going to wake up and find out this was just a dream!

Thanks, Best of Luck, Go DPMS!

They put the wrong hieght gasblock on it like they did mine. The gasblock you have is for the standard tall receiver. Since you have the A3, you need a shorter gasblock. If you ever put iron sites on it, you would not be able to get a zero.

Call DPMS and tell them you need the correct gasblock. They sent me the correct one and all I need to do is send the old one back once i swap them out. Takes 5 minutes to change with proper tools.

Get an AR10 dewey bore guide. Worth the $25 from brownells before you mess up the barrel.

I'm getting submoa with a POS China 3x9 scope that goes in and out of focus, and mixed bag of different headstamp and production date mil-surp 308. Best was .6 moa with 150 grain reloads.
I'm sure I'll get .3 to.5 moa once it get it setup right.
I need to decide onwhat glass I want. I have a 6-24x50 Veber LightMaster on my bolt gun and like to dial it up and see bullet holes without a spotting scope. My other choice is a fixed 10x SS.
I just don't know if 10x will be enough for my old eyes (49 yrs.)
As far as bullets, it seems the 69 grain match kings top the list.

I have a 6x24x55 Millet and its sweet.

I get great results with cheap surplus SA at 300 yds..

In my book the DPMS .308 kicks ass and is very accurate and that is with the cheap ammo.

I would highly recommend one..

+1 for RRArms. I got my 24" 308LR through them last fall. It took a few weeks, but Mike was great to deal with. They answered all questions I had. Good Folks!
I put a Nikon 6.5-20x44 on mine, and I wouldn't want to be on the wrong end of the muzzle.

Did better with the nikon. Forgot my sand bag so I shot off the bipod with no butt support. Still got down to .5 moa. with cheap Gerogia Arms 150 grain reloads
The wind was real bad, blowing target back and forth. Hope to get out early when conditons are bettter next week.
