It's an HBAR with M203 mounting cuts.

pretty much

the SOCOM profile was designed to better handled full auto fire. i had two of them i bought several years ago for the "cool" factor. notice i said "had".

they are heavy, the accuracy gain between the SOCOM and std gov't profile was nil, the amount of weight saved will allow me to go with a longer railed handguard.

Love my Colt Socom upper. Something about that extra meat in the barrrel makes me feel more confident on how well it'll handle under abuse in a SHTF senario.

i guess the psychological aspect that it gives you more confidence in the platform is worth something

Negative. The SOCOM barrel is a medium-contour barrel. All weights listed below are for the stripped barrels; that is the barrel and barrel extension only.

Colt 6520/6720, 16" light-weight barrel: 1 pound, 6 ounces.

Colt 14.5" M4/government profile barrel: 1 pound, 9 ounces.

Colt 6920, 16" M4/governmnet profile barrel: 1 pound, 12 ounces.

Colt 14.5” SOCOM barrel: 1 pound, 13 ounces.

Colt 6721, 16" HBAR: 2 pounds, 3.4 ounces.

Standard M4/government profile versus SOCOM profile.

I bought a SOCOM profile barrel years back, I liked it as an M4A1 clone, but I thought it was heavy in comparison to my government profile M4s, and figured it would just end up being an oddity in my collection, I don't have FA, so I figured I didn't need the extra weight.

When I started using suppressors more often, it was pointed out to me (when I asked about another member's preference for M4A1 barrels) that the M4A1 barrel had a lot less potential for POI shift with the can mounted on the end. A good point for me, and I am planning to do a "phased replacement" over the course of the next couple of years to M4A1 profile barrels.

ETA: FWIW, I barely even notice the weight difference now between my M4A1 profile barrels and my M4 profiles.

Excellent info, thanks Molon! I always love your posts.

I was surprised actually at how light my SOCOM 14.5" felt. According to Molon it's 4 ounces heavier than the equivalent gov't profile barrel, which is a quarter pound. That's a good chunk of weight but not enough to make or break your carbine's "light-weightness" in my opinion.

That said, I think my next will be a light-weight profile barrel. Don't own any of those yet... Even a 16" HBAR would be lighter than my POF-system equipped Bushmaster Gas Piston with 16" gov't profile barrel. The piston system gas block alone probably weighs a whole pound.

Not to get into a battle over semantics but I've always considered a barrel that's noticeably heavier under the handguards than the .750 FSB diameter a "heavy barrel". It doesn't have that even-heavier section at the breech end that typical Colt HBARs have but it's similar to Bushmaster and others' HBARs that are on the market with a diameter under the handguards at (IIRC) 0.850.
