I bought an upper about 10 years ago before I knew anything about AR's. I was thinking it was a Colt M4. It is a 1 in 9 twist. How can I confirm if is really a Colt or not?

What does the barrel say? Is there and M4 mark on the upper above the gas tube hole?

If it's a Colt the receiver will have a "C" above the forward assist and Colt proof marks near the delta ring.

That makes it highly doubtful that it is a genuine Colt M4.

Not necessarily. The receivers shown below are from genuine Colts.

Dude, that is not a Colt M4. Can you post a pic of the entire barrel with the handguards off. It's likely a Colt 6721 or possibly a 6922, also sold as a AR6920-DC upper.

6721

6922, AR6920-DC

the OP only said he "thought" it was an M4, he's just trying to figure out if it's authentic colt... colt does make 1/9 twist uppers, and his pics appear to be a colt barrel.

What part of "Colt M4 upper" and "I was thinking it was a Colt M4" from the OPs post didn't you understand. His picture clearly shows that it is not an M4.

Yep, my barrel looks like the 6922. I bought the AR about 11 years ago and then ordered the complete upper about a year later. I ordered the upper out of a ShotGun News magazine. So is my upper a Colt? Also, what makes a M4 diffrent from what I have? Is mine shit? lol...

Given the additional information it is a Colt M4 and certainly is NOT shit. How does it shoot? Round count? The "C" is the Colt maker mark, the AF just means that they used a forge blank made by Alco Forge. Between the delta ring and the ejection port there should be two small faint proof marks. A "VP" in an inverted triangle and a "C" in a square.

An M4 upper has a 14.5" barrel with a 1:7" twist. Your 6922 /AR6920-DC has a 16.1" barrel with a 1:9" twist. Upper conversions such as yours, do not usually have proof marks on them. Normally, only complete rifles do. I owned two of the 6922/AR6920-DC uppers and they were both 100% reliable. Accuracy was as expected for a chrome lined, NATO chambered, governmnet profile barrel. It's a fine upper and should serve you well.
