 Best rail cover

I've seen lots of rail covers and considered the Magpul XTM, Larue, and standard ladder rail covers. But, for those of you that have experience with different styles, who do you believe is making the best rail covers right now? The Larue is tempting due to the price, but I'm not opposed to something that costs more if it's a better product. I want protection for me and the rifle. Please give me some feedback. Thank you in advanced.

I'm partial to my KAC rail covers. Fit and finish is top notch.

The more I look at the Larue covers, the more I like them. I'm just concerned about how securely they attach. I dont want em popping off on me.

Of the ones I've handled the KAC's are by far my favorite.

Any FDE and Foliage ones made yet?

Or, still only black and the dated tan?

They've come in OD green and Taupe (matches the LMT SOPMOD) for a few years now.

Magpul XTMs are good to go.

I like the look of the Magpul ladders. I like the camo effect it gives off.

If LaRue would make their indexing clips in different colors (Black, OD, Tan, FDE, UDE, etc), I would be all over those.

Tango Down SCAR panels on the sides, ladders on top and bottom.

Tango Down I like the best.

The KAC metal clip seems strange and only likes to lock on the ends of the rail not in the middle for me.

Ergo or Magpul Ladders on top or on fatter rails.

I carried black Magpul XT rail covers in Iraq, best covers ever.

Surefire ladders are the best ladder covers out there.

Another XTM user here. I've also tried the regular old Ergo ladder covers but I just prefer the feel of the XTM. I like the choice of alternating colors too.

Im partial to rail ladders. I have surefire and magpul, and I like the surefire a lot better. They are much cheaper, too.

thanks for the input so far. It seems like the Magpul XTM's and Surefire ladder rails are a good combo. Do you put ladder rails on the TOP side of the rail system also? Or use the same style rail covers on all 4 sides?

This and XT rail covers I use both since I have a mid length the XT does not cover the full length so I use the XTM to fill in the rest. Also I can remove them and attach without having to take off the whole cover.

I really like the fit and feel of the XT panels. They can be cut to fit.

Just use regular ladder covers for the top rail to protect the slots. They are the lowest profile possible.

I like KAC and Magpul XTM panels. Both are fairly low profile and lock up tight. I prefer to use one or two KAC panels rather than a whole bunch of little XTM pieces. The problem with the KAC panels is that they only lock into specific slots on the rail.

I use KAC & Magpul XTMs. They are the best for my needs.

It seems like most use these. I see them a lot.

Ergo also makes some.

Any link available where to get the "taupe or FDE" KAC rail cover ? (I have tons of KAC and they are my favourite)

I've seen them on the EE. Otherwise you can get them from Operations Parts.

Do they actually match FDE?

True FDE is available form Magpul, Tangodown, Vltor, etc.

How thick are the KAC covers? Do they make the handguards bulky? AND, how easy do the Magpul XTM covers come off? I'm worried they would "pop off" when bumped.

The KAC rail covers are about as thick as they get.

I think the Tango Down SCAR covers are nice. I use the KAC ones, but they wear out after using them a few times and move back and forth on the rail some. The Tango Down SCAR covers can be placed anywhere on the rail, are a little lower profile, and have more grip.

I am partial to the ladder covers myself. Gives the rail a lower profile allowing me to get a more solid grip

Larue has some new rail clips. I haven't tried them but they look neat.

I asked the same question a while back and was told KAC is about as thick as ya can get and the poster suggested the Magpul XM and XTM and i went with XTM.The XTM snap on and lock super tight and ya can unlock them with a bullet tip.I really like the slim feel and killer looks...

KAC and Magpul XTM

The XTM looks as though it provides good protection for the gun and the shooter. Light weight, thin, according to those who have them or used them, very solid also. Any other opinions or experienced users that have other experience with other covers out there? I'd like to know more about the Larue index clips. They look interesting and the cable holder for lights is innovative. Anyone use these yet that want to chime in?

Looks like Ill be the odd one out and say that you should look into the Troy covers.

I love the LaRue index clips. They are comfortable and very low profile. And they are staying on there until you really want them to come off. I can't compare them to others as this is my first AR and the only rail covers I have ever used. But I don't think you would be disappointed.

Very nice. I'll have to consider the LaRue clips after I get my new upper.

Thanks for sharing the photos.

I thought I would like those myself... I ended up buying some, I'm not to pleased with them. For ladder rail covers I like the black Ergo ones better.
