Another member (we will call him dupplex) and I are debating velocities between barrel coatings.
He is saying an 11.5" barrel that is melonited (Adams Arms specifically) will produce 14.5" (or even 16") velocities b/c of the reduction of friction this provides.
I call BS - looking at 193 velocities from standard barrels there in no way this seems possible to me. Maybe a slight FPS increase but no way in hell 200-300FPS increase out of comparable 11.5: barrels one being having a melonite coating.
Thoughts?
I'm with you here, but only way to go is buying a chrony and running a test.
I would expect maybe 50fps. Same thing for polygonal rifling, slight increase due to reduced drag... But not much

How does physics work?
If there ever was such a "miracle" dont you think it would be on every gun rag/net thread available

i thought polygonal rifling was put to bed like 5 years ago... it was the tighter chamber NOT the rifling... several independent chronos showed little to no improvement as claimed by companies like noveske...
more snake oil than you can handle.
With the same ammo you'd actually expect a slight DECREASE in velocity comparing a melonited (a treatment, not actually a coating) barrel to an identical barrel that's not been treated. Melonite reduces friction as you know, and in exactly the same way as moly coating bullets will result in lower velocities compared to naked bullets with the same load so will melonite. What you'd need to do is adjust the load upwards to take advantage of the lower friction. In the ideal case, you'll find about a 3% velocity increase once you adjust the load for the melonited barrel.

Thats my point/thoughts.
If you want to cheat, get some high velocity ammo for Chrome. Used radway green ammo
or the melonite.
