Sorry if this is a stupid question. Is there any easy way to tell without measuring the diameter? Does anyone have these measurements and feel like sharing them?

Thanks in advance.

Commercial is fatter but I dont know how much. Commercial tubes have a slant at the back while milspec is flat. Hope this helps alil. I`m new to this stuff too.

FTWMs posting; while accurate, is incomplete. The slant back commercial tubes, while very common these days, are not the only commercial tubes. There are plenty of commercial, flat end tubes out there from the days when there was only one style collapsible butt; and there are only two ways to ID them.

The first is, of course by measuring. The only other way is to examine the joint where the adjustment rail goes into the main tube. If the rail has a distinct sharp angle, it's milspec. If it's a rounded "blended in" kind of joint, it's commercial

Now that I am looking at this, it looks as though the picture is suggesting that the threads are actually slightly larger for mil specs, Does this mean that Lower Receivers are only threaded for one or the other? Or are they interchangeable? Or have I read entirely to far into an already oustanding illustration?

Isn't there also a difference in the threads. I heard that Milspec used a 'rolled' thread while commercial used a 'cut' thread. The rolled thread would raise up the metal a bit, which makes sense as to why the commercial needed to be larger in diameter.
