 Colt AR15 date of manufacture?

Is there anywhere that I can look to determine the date of manufacture of a Colt rifle based on the S/N? The gun in question is an unfired Colt Sporter.

There should be a "born on" date stamped on the receiver end of the barrel ex: 05/07.

Also, the reference book "Black Rifle II" has the mfg year versus S/N for Sporter I rifles on pages 283-284. If you give me the approx S/N, I'll get you the year--example SP160XX

This is not going to be as straight forward as I thought:

The reference says that rifles with S/Ns "MH086025" and below were Pre-ban Sporter Match HBARs manufactured before 1994. This would appear to be the only info available that applies to your rifle.

The same reference says that for Colt AR-15 Sporter I rifles with S/Ns between
SP02501 and SP00101 were manufactured in 1965. The examples shown, clearly show the "SP" prefix however and not MH, so I don't think this date applies to your situation.

There are others who post regularly who obviously have access to much more info than I who can probably pin this down for you. I also recall that owners were able to get help from Colt's Customer Service Dept on S/N vs mfg date. Don't have their phone number, but presume it's on their website.

Interesting - close but not quite.

This one has the oversized front pivot pin, but standard sized hammer/trigger pins. It's a slabside - no mag fence.

eta. It has the sear block - pinned on both sides. A2 flash hider with crush peel washer, but no bayo lug.

Here is an updated HBAR data base. You fits into the later MH029XXX features rather then the earlier type. Trigger pins were switched to the bigger size starting with MH 006600. So yours should have these bigger trigger/hammer pins unless yours was an older COLT FIREARM DIVISION lower?

R6600

Serial numbers picks up were the SP1 left off, produced 1985-1990. Features are as such:

CM upper forge code, big hole slab side lower, no sear block, no auto sear cut in upper, small pin hammer/trigger pins, modern small forward assist, SP1 bolt carrier, bolt marked MPC with a space between the M and the P, blue extractor buffer, AR-15 A2 HBAR SPORTER, lower roll marked COLT’S FIREARM DIVISION, barrel stamped C MP 5.56 NATO 1/7 HBAR, peel washer, A2 furniture, bayo lug

Not going to list features of each example, unless they are different then indicated above. The Delta HBAR, R6600DH was introduced in 1987.

My Colt serial # MH008XXX was produced in 1990, I bought it new in early January 1991. It has no fence, no bayonet lug & no sear block. That may give you some idea of when yours was produced.

I can't remember exactly. I keep most of my guns at my parent's house so I'll check as soon as I can.

Zack3g:

Assuming I'm reading data from the source correctly, the year of manufacture for those s/ns should be 1978, and 1979 respectively.
