Going to the Ranch this weekend -
My buddy said he bought some at a gun show and is bringing it with him -

People say that tannerite is not an explosive ---- IS IT ?????????

If I put that one a 1/2 full can of gas and shoot it from 50 yrds. Will the tannerite just blow up, or will the can also blow up...

It is not a pyrotechnic explosive; it will not set off gas or propane.

It is not considered an explosive untill you mix it . Then it is illegal to transport it or store it. It is not a pyro though.

What is this "Tannerite" stuff? What's it used for? Just curious...

I think it was originally developed (or some subsidiary of it) to clear tree stumps. It works off the principle or pressure. Once mixed, if the Tannerite experiences some minimum of pressure per square inch on it it starts a chain reaction, expanding its volume very rapidly. This is what we see as the explosion. The misture is simply increasing its volume to account for the pressure increase in about a tenth of a second (if that long).

Fun stuff.

Is there a way to detonate it without shooting it?

Recent Hun farm action. This was a 16oz (I think, could have been 32oz) Tannerite target. Tannerite good. Tannerite go BOOM!

- the 'specks' are rain/drizzle reflected in the flash of the camera

If you want to shoot gas cans just open up the hollowpoint in a bullet until a cigarette lighter flint will fit in the hole. Works great on near empty propane bottles too.

+1
BTW, wasn't there a thread in gd a couple of weeks back about some soon to be released newer Tannerite targets? I think they were going to be easier to mix. Anyone know anything about that?

Tannerite is not an explosive; it's a stimulant or an antidepressant.

Yes. Dan Tanner told me that you can also use a blasting cap or primer cord.
