New to Ar's ...Few questions
I just bought a Daniel Defense complete upper new. Upon looking around, I noticed a few pieces or specs/particals/chunks, etc...on the inside of the "pocket" of the bolt face. I dont know if Daniel Defense tests these uppers before they ship them, or it was a returned product ( bought from midway usa ). I do know it was missing the forgrip that was to be included, so maybe its a return. I contacted them about the grip, and was told to contact DD. If they wont send me one, then I need to send the upper back for replacement. Anyways, back to the brass chunks, is it normal? IIf so, maybe DD tests them, and all is ok. I plan to call DD in the morning to see what I should do from here. Any help is appreciated.
Here are some pics. took with phone, so sorry for quality
Here is where I found the particles. The gold ya see now is not particles. Just looks like some sort of marks on the face:
Bottom view of the carrier...Little wear, not much I assume?
Right side...
Left side:
Throat:

I'm glad you posted here, DD's people are good to help. Maybe not today, but they will. From my experience I know that they do test fire complete rifles which I'm pretty sure about all companies do. I'm sure the answer is the same for uppers. The brass chunks are completely normal, nothing to worry about. That being said the fact that you didn't receive your vfg worries me its possible it was left out but seems a little sketchy! It is very possible that it was a return. Unfortunately you will probably never know the real answer. But know this DD will stand behind their product. Talk to them hopefully they will send you a vfg. I am writing this from experience with owning DD rifles. Don't get discouraged you have a great product and I'm sure you will enjoy it.
BTW the pics are good and by looking at them it couldn't have been fired much more than just a test fire. Hope that makes you feel better about it!
Thanks for the help!! As I said, if it was returned and not for being defective, I am ok with it. If everything is good, I'll be happy I am sure. I also kinda thought that it would at least come with some kind of care instructions, or something. Nothing at all in the box except the upper itself. I also examined the rails, and along the rails for marks that mounting optics would leave, but find no marks whatsoever. Maybe I am just paranoid, but spending that much on parts might cause it lol
Yeah I don't blame you a bit. When you buy something like that and spend that kind of money it should be in perfect condition. I would have thought there would have been a manual as well, but I've never purchased just an upper. Hopefully some one from DD will chime.
I just went back to your original post and looked at the pics of your dissed BCG. In my personal opinion it looks like its had way more than the two or three test rounds. I know you don't want to hear this, but I think I would send it back and demand a new item or a full refund. In my opinion this is all Midway USA's problem and they should make it right. Keep the thread updated I want to know if your problem gets resolved.
Also I just went and looked at my bolts and as someone else stated in the other thread, the firing pin hole has a flat side between 6 and 9 o'clock (looking at the face). It just doesn't look right right.
Your rifle is absolutely fine, and yes I read all of your additional comments/questions.
Looks exactly as it should!!! Now go shoot it!!!!
Ok, so at the worst, if the firing pin hole is out of round, I could replace the bolt/carrier and be good to go, correct? Since everything else about the upper looks pretty new, I would be safe to assume the barrel would be ok....almost like someone ordered the upper, and swapped the good BCG with their used one. I hate to say this, but if everything else about the upper/barrel would be ok, I'd almost just as soon buy a new BCG ( even though I shouldnt have to, as I paid for a new one to be in the upper ), and toss it in, and it'd be like new?
And that's all I'm saying and maybe some people just don't get the picture but you bought a BRAND NEW UPPER and that is what you should have! The rifle maybe flawless and never give you a problem but it's beside the point. Just trying to help.
I agree 100%. Fact is I paid for new, and did not get 100% new parts. I just pulled the BCG and the charging handle out of the upper and inspected it. The handle looks as if its never been touched. I went over each rail for an indentation, scuffs from optics mounting, etc. I cant find anything except an occasiona nick here or there to make me think otherwise of it being new. The barrel, gas tube, gas block and everything else looks to be new, as I had a bright flashlight shining thru the holes in the foregrip....Nothing that even makes one think its used. Fact is, the only thing that looks to have real wear is the BCG. I even pulled the bolt out of the carrier, and inspected it fully. There is definately wear( like the hole lost its edge and the hole is sort of expanded) where the firing pin sticks out. I shined the light up thru it, while sticking the tip of the pin in from the front. I figured any wear would reveal light showing thru the worn spots past the pin tip. It does somewhat. All in all, I come to the conclusion someone purchased it, swapped the BCG, kept the vertical foregrip, and sent it back. Atleast thats my theory. I called MW, and they said to send it back, but they might not have any more in stock when it gets there, as they only had a few left ( and she said they cant reserve me one ). I dont want to waste all the money shipping back to them, and possibly having to wait awhile. I'll see what they say about a replacement BCG, and go from there. If all else fails, I guess I'll have to buy a new one. Just about disgusted.

I hear you man. I hate you have to deal with it. I hope everything works out for you. Again DD stuff is great BUT YOU SHOULD GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! And in my opinion it doesn't appear that's the case.
Yep, and to be honest, I been wanting and waiting for my chance to get the funds for a DD since I first laid eyes on the DD torture test. I figured Id never have an issue.... Just like I told the wife.." Thats my luck, I couldnt have got one of the ones under it, or beside it on a shelf" lol. Praying this will be the worst of my issues.
*edit*
On a brighter note, before any of this was found out, I had a heck of a fun time building my first lower. I couldnt have asked for a better fitting upper for my spikes lower.
That's great your running a spikes lower, spikes stuff is awesome. I personally don't own any, but two friends who do. I helped them with theirs, and they have been two of the best guns I've ever seen, especially for the price. And btw I have the same luck!
Situation resolved!! Couldnt have asked for better service. Thanks and shout out to Bill and Daniel Defense!!

Awesome!

NVM.
Pics make it look like its been proof tested, but hell if I know. I always look at the cam pin....and the bolt tail if I want to see if my BCG is brand new.
My guess is you sent back an upper with a brand new proof tested BCG that was perfectly acceptable. I've seen more wear and more beat up stuff on brand new out of the box tag still on the flashhider M4A1's from Colt.
