 Cutting a SR-15 down to 14.5"?

My SR-15 fund is growing by the day and in anticipation of the new arrival I've been running a couple of things through my mind. I know the SR-15 is praised for how light, well balanced and fast handling it is but I've come to love my 14.5" colt with a welded nt4 flash hider.

Would a SR-15 work with the barrel cut to 14.5-14.7"? I know it has a longer gas system than a standard mid length but wonder if/how it would run. Anyone tried this? What are the chances of being able to send it back for a new barrel if I give it a go and it doesn't work out?

They would certainly sell you a new barrel. But the good news is they work at 14.5.

That's what I wanted to hear. Do you have any pics of one at 14.5"?

KAC stated they would work at 14.5", but I'm not going to hunt and dig for that post.

I have a cutdown to 14.5" KAC barrel, but I'm running a Noveske Switchblock so I can't comment on if will work with the standard KAC gas block. But as mention, Trey or Kevin (someone from KAC) mention that they will cycle at 14.5".

I've personally seen two that have been cut down and one had to go back to get the gas port opened up a tad to cycle correctly so, they do work when done properly.

Gas port will need to be opened - but it can be done.

Will the gas port need to be opened up on the newer SR-15s with the already larger port. Thanks in advance.

Same question. Also how do you know what size port the gun has, is there a SN cutoff for the older smaller ones?

Probably better to just give the diameter of the port size should be so there won't be any guessing..
