Tool is supposed to be in hand today and, once set up, the test production mags are going to be run. We're going to shoot the Heqq out of them and when they pass that final check, they go into production.

They strated running what we all anticipate being the last sample/first production mags about an hour and a half ago. Once they are approved, they'll start filling our orders and we'll be awash in RRA/Thermold 20rd polymer LAR-8 mags. More news next week after test-firing with the mags is completed.

We have a crew out shooting a half dozen rifles with fifty test magazines right now (mid-afternoon, Monday June 20).

So the obvious question is...

How do we get on that crew?

They'll be back out this morning as soon as we can get on the range. Everything went well with 308, and we'll b echecking 243 and 7-08 and maybe a couple others today.

I dont have a 7mm-08 or a 243 , so if everything went well with the 308 you can just go ahead and send me my order and I will let you know how well the 308 mags work.

Not going to happen but, happy birthday anyway Look at the bright side, if you got them in time, and they did not work, would you be happy? First run of polymer mags that no one has gotten to work yet and some who say it cannot be done due to available space and polymer thickness. It takes time to pull off magic and if anyone can do it, its Rock River.

We've had the mags working well as far as feeding goes fo rmonths. Most of the delay since then has just been what we would call minor but necessary tweaks to the mag and the tooling. With tolerancing and everything else that comes into play, we have tested the new mag in multiple rifles, and while it is still snug in the magwells at the smallest end of the dimensional tolerancing. That's something that we'll all probably have to live with (mags don't drop "as freely" from those rifles as they do from other rifles with slightly larger magwells).
We're doing some very minor final tweaks and should know a more on that today (I think). A lot of time and effort (a big thank you to Thermold) has gone into making a good quality LAR-8 magazine free of many of the problems associatesd with SOME FAL mags.
Shouldn't be much longer.

The FAL magazine is not a stand-alone feed device. It merely contains cartridges and presents them to the feed lips in the rifle. The actual, functional feed lips are machined into the upper receiver. The feed lips protect the magazine’s lips from damage. The machined lips are in close alignment with the chamber and tolerate poor quality magazines. Because the AR-10 requires the magazine lips to feed, the FAL magazine was not determined to be tough enough for an AR-10.

Rock River designed a rifle around a magazine rather then the other way around. The LAR 8 does not have feed lips.

Thin polymer lips will be more prone to cracking and over expanding. A major polymer magazine manufacturer has stated that wall thickness and available space is a problem in a polymer .308 magazine and will not manufacture them for a LAR8. Ideas included steel inserts similar to the way Glock mags are made. However, if it can be done in polymer, R.R. would be the one to pull it off. Time and rounds down range will tell.

Fine.
We have to perform one step here, and we're doing that now on the first batch in.
Soem will be shipping as soon as next week. There are more mags coming in behind this first batch, and shipments shoulfd jjust become pretty regular within several weeks.

Is Rock River sending the new mags with there new LR-8s now that you have them ? I just ordered a new 16 inch mid today. I liked my first one so much . Even with the feed problems it's a blast to shoot. May set this one up for home defence

Rifles are still shipping with 20rd steel FAL/L1A1 mags. I don't know when or if we will switch to the Thermolds as the standard LAR-8 ,magazine with every LAR-8. The Thermolds will be going out as standard with the .243 and 7mm-08 LAR-8s, as they work much better than the steel mags with those calibers.

A few have gone out. We're just now getting the balance of the first batch in and we're taking care of the single operation that we have to do on them here at RRA (foir this batch only) en masse. Then we'll ship what we have and await the next deliveries (which shouldn't be too far out).

Lucky first recipients, we get the ones that still were not right after the second to hopefully last mold revisions. Lets hope the "single operation" is not whittling down to make fit.

Actually the single action that we're taking now is goign to be done at he factory from her eon out and shouldn't cause any further delays. Several hundred mags have shipped in the past couple weeks and more are following rapidly behind them.
