A couple of Small Issues with the 50 Round Drum

First let me say it runs great, put through almost 1500 rounds through it in the last few range trips.

First issue, From the first time using the drum last round did not chamber, I though no big deal and than I was able to load up 50 more rounds into it, and as always the last round would not chamber. So I found out the issue this past weekend, it my first time taking the drum apart, and read it uses 10 dummy rounds, mine only has 9.

Second Issue, which is most annoying and time consuming. Also since about the 2nd or 3rd time loading the drum, I have had to use a screw drive to put slight pressure on the rounds while I turn the case with my thumb before I drop the rounds into the tower. It seems as if the drum "teeth" or what ever it's called that holds the rounds, doesn't grab them and move them into the drum. Is this a known issue or defect or is having to do what I am doing is the only work around? It is taking me about 4-5 minutes to load the drum having to use this extra step.

I think you need the shorter/less stretchy dummy round rubber band.

Interesting, I understand what you are saying, since I only have 9 dummy rounds instead of 10 that are required for the drum it doesn't allow the first live round to sit correctly and prevents from loading correctly. Maybe I'll just order some dummy rounds and try to fix it?

Edit:
Nevermind I won't be ordering $2.00 in parts and pay $6.00 in shipping for something that should cost about a $1.00 or less via USPS.

I am sure Kevin will be around soon, otherwise IM or e-mai him. I am sure he will take care of you...he took care of me when I was having the same issue with 3 brand new drums.

Just sent him an IM.

I placed a back order for 2 more drums from MidwayUSA

Edit:
Probably won't hear from them on the boards I think they are still busy with the move.

Anyway just got off the phone with them, he said that was probably the issue and they are sending me a follower set that has the dummy rounds on it so I'll be able to repair mine.

Also got the email last night that Midway has my order for the two more drums. Should get them by the weekend. woot.

Well last night I put in the new follower set and still have the issue with loading. Even the Newer ones I received might have the same issue. The only thing I can think of it's the ammo, but it does it on the two kinds I use. CCI Stingers and Agulia Super Max rounds.

Oh well, guess I'll just continue to use the screw driver to put slight pressure on the rounds as I load. As long as I'm not having any feeding issues I won't mind too much.

When you say the last round won't chamber do you mean the bolt closes without extracting the last round?
If this is the case then try the mod to trim the follower round stop to allow it to ride a bit higher.

Also my 4 mags do not allow the rounds to drop free to the bottom of the feed tower.
What I do is as I am pushing the next round into the tower I rotate the drum "teeth" at the same time so it
advances one round at a time and doesn't skip/miss a round.

That issue was solved, I only had 9 instead of 10 dummy rounds hence the last round in the drum was acting like the 10th dummy round that does not chamber. Got extra dummy round from BDM so that won't be a problem now.

You are doing the same thing I am, applying light pressure as you rotate the spindle with teeth, as you stated if you don't rounds get skip/missed. However the design of loading the drums is not meant to be this way, you should be able to just rotate and drop rounds in with out having to use something else. In other words, you and I have found a work around to a flaw in the drum.

Agreed. My drums didn't have any hangups when I first got them and now they do so I just figured it is from wax/crud that built up.
I am too lazy to take the drums apart and clean the towers and loading 1 or 2 at a time is working for me.
Went to the range yesterday and dumped all 4 with no problems, I love those mags.

FWIW, I recall someone at the WI HTF shoot this weekend having similar problems with a 50 round black Dog drum.

Ouch, Umm, Now I couldn't handle 1-2 rounds at a time. When I turn drum I use a skinny flat blade screw driver to put a small amount of pressure on the top round just enough for the teeth to pick them up and rotate them. Usually there will be space for about 5-9 rounds to be dropped in. I guess I'm saying I can load it how it is supposed to be loaded just I have to use something to press the rounds down as I turn the inner spindle so the extra time is having to pull out the screw driver set it down in order to load that stack.

My thumb must be girly as I do much better advancing it just far enough to get a few down and then I can back off the pressure for a moment
which helps.
